Story of Pannini
You may know the interesting story as to how Panini, the originator of
Sanskrit grammar, received knowledge from Lord Siva. He was supposed to be
the dullest of the students in a group that was studying from a Guru in
Taxila, Taksha Shila. The other boys were very intelligent. Panini was the
most stupid, the least intelligent, very much belittled and made fun of by
the students in the class. He was deeply hurt that he was being cowed down
by other students and that he could not understand anything that the teacher
said. Almost in a desperate mood of disgust with everything, he went to the
forest and deeply contemplated on Lord Siva. He prayed, "O Lord! Bless me
with Knowledge." It is said that Lord Siva appeared before him, danced and
revolved His Dakka or Damaru fourteen times, and the following fourteen
sounds were made: 1. Aiun, 2. Rlrk, 3. Aowng, 4. Ai ouch, 5. Ha ya va rat,
6. Lan, 7. Na ma nga na nam, 8. Jha bhanj, 9. Gha dha dhash, 10. Ja ba ga da
das, 11. Kha pha chha tha tha cha ta tav, 12. Ka pay, 13. Sa sha sar, and
14. Hal. All this constitutes the very essence of Sanskrit grammar. These
sounds, meaningless as they may appear to us, became the foundation of
Sanskrit grammar and Sanskrit literature.
So, God can teach us without books and without the usual medium of
instruction, by a thought, a sound, a look, a touch or a benign gesture.

Yes -Sandhi is one thing - it just joins two words in a sequence, it is not
necessarily making a compound. The rules of Sandhi is straightforward.
However shivausadhi is to be taken as a compound - then it may be a genetive
tatpurusha - herb of Shiva, with the feminine long I ending.

To clarify, the word is oSadhI (f, medicinal herb), but after sandhi it
becomes au, ie a+o = au.
Sandhi is one thing - it just joins two words phonetically in a sequence, it
is not necessarily making a compound. The rules of Sandhi are
straightforward. However if shivausadhi is to be taken as a compound - then
it may be a genetive tatpurusha - ie herb of Shiva, with the feminine long I
ending, nominative singular.

he/she has rock-solid basic skills. I would suggest that you read M.R.
Kale's A Higher Sanskrit Grammar from the beginning (the more you know
the faster you will go through the book). That way you ensure that
later on when you read serious Sanskrit texts and Siddhanta Kaumudi
grammar, you will waste minimum amount of time referring back to the
grammar. If you decide to start with Kale's book, let me know because
there are some tips I have regarding the order in which the book
should be read in my experience.

I received email from Samata publishers asking for help. They are selling
original Sanskrit "Complete Works of Shankaracharya" a 10-volume series for
4000 rupees. In the past I paid 12,000 rupees for the same plus Fedex
international priority to USA. I read portions of some of those books; I can
say every penny of the money I spent is well spent. These books are reprint
of original "Vani Vilas Press" version. In my opinion, even if you are not
very proficient in Sanskrit right now, I would say seize this opportunity
and obtain these books. Consider it a rare privilege to possess these books.
In a few years, there won't be any publisher able to or willing to print
these books. If you can afford, please pay as much money as you can (more
than 4000 rupees I mean), to the publisher, for these books.
I am enclosing the email I received from the publisher. Note that I have NO
financial interest in this while thing.
