I am seeking advice on the most plausible translation of a small phrase
"namadvajrapaaNiim.h" that appears in Adishankara's
Sharada-bhujanga-prayata-ashtakam.
Verse four, line two reads as follows: ramatkiiravaaNii.n
namadvajrapaaNiim.h
I've found two English translations: (1) venerated by Vajrapani (2) holding
a thunderbolt at a
slant.
I am especially intrigued by the second translation. First of all, is it
grammatically correct?
And if so: In Sanskrit literature does the thunderbolt carry the
connotation, as it does in the
West, of sudden inspiration, "a bolt from the blue"? It is most agreeable to
associate Sharada
with inspirations of this type.
As an aside: In the few paintings I have seen of Shringeri Sharadamba, it
seems to be a pot of
nectar that she holds at a slant in her upper left hand.
I will be most grateful for any opinions on all this.
