In the last lesson, we learnt two things - 1) how to interpret paaNini
sutras and their siddhaanta kaumudi explanations. We also introduced the
cardinal suutra for alphabet abbreviations - aadirantyena sahetaa.
Then I asked a question. In the explanation of halantyaM, I said the last
hal varNa in upadesha becomes it. But the suutra doesn't have a word called
'it' in it. Where did it come from?
The LSK answer for this is, "suutreShu adR^iShTam padam sUtraantaraat
anuvartaniiyaM sarvatra'
That means, if a word is missing from a sUtraM it should be inferred from a
previous sUtram in the aShTaadhyaayii text. Let's leave it at that for now.
In this episode, we will examine the phonetic basis of the sanskrit
alphabet as well as a few more 'sa.nj~naaH'.
Our next rule introduces the term 'savarNaM':
*tulya-asya prayatnaM savarNaM*
tulya = equivalent
aasya prayatnaM = utterance via the mouth
savarNam means equivalently/similarly uttered/pronounced akSharam
What are those equivalences? Before we go there, let me introduce another
abbreviation used by paaNini:
ku stands for ka kha ga gha and ~na - (also called ka-varga)
chu stands for cha chha ja jha ~Na (also called cha-varga)
Tu stands for Ta Tha Da Dha Na (as in gaNapati) - also called Ta-varga
tu stands for ta tha da dha na (as in shani vaasaraH) - also called
ta-varga
pu stands for pa pha ba bha ma - also called pa-varga
What are those places in our mouth of equivalent utterence? They are,
kaNTha (throat), taalu (palate), mUrdhaa (top of the palate), dantaaH
(teeth), oShThau (lips), naasikaa (nose), kaNTha taalu (throat+palate),
kaNThaoShTham (throat+lips), dantoShTham (teeth+lips), ...
Now for the varNa classes:
*a ku ha visarjaniiyaanaaM kaNThaH*
the letters a, ka kha ga gha ~na, ha and visarga are uttered from the kaNTha
or throat and hence form the kaNTha class.

I don't know if there is an ITRANS notation for upadhmaaniiya varNau
~Na ma ~na Na naanaaM naasikaa
Nasals are ~Na, ma ~na Na and na.
e ai are kaNTha taalu (throat + palate)
o au are kaNThoShThau (throat + lips)
va is dantoShThaM (teeth + lips)
*jihvaamuuliiyasya jihvaamuulaM *(base of the tongue)
Special variations of ka and kha, called 'jihvaamuuliiya' arise when
preceded by a visarga
e.g., as in antaH+karaNa
The way to pronounce this is to constrict the throat at the base of the
tongue and say ka.
There are several other important pronunciation classes that I'd like to
skip for now to avoid overload.
There is a nice table in the LSK that lists all akSharas and their class
names.
One more episode, and we'll be done with the introduction of the basic
terms, and also the first chapter of LSK.

Now that I've introduced rules explaining the phonetic arrangement of
Sanskrit alphabet, let us dwell a bit on the logical order therein. If you
observe the letters in the various groups mentioned below, there is a
logical gradation in the aasya prayatna (ucchaaraNa effort) from ka-varga to
the pa-varga - from variations using the throat to variations using the lips
with various parts of the mouth in between.
The first set (a ku ha visarga) is uttered using the inmost part of the
mouth, i.e., the throat, without the use of the tongue.
The second set (i chu ya sha) uses the various ways of contorting the middle
part of the tongue relative to the soft palate.
The third set (R^i Tu ra Sha) is uttered by turning the tongue inward and
touching the mUrdha (the crest of the palate)
The fourth set (L^i tu la sa) is uttered by playing the tip of the tongue
against the tissue just behind the front teeth.
The fifth set (u pu fpa fpha) is uttered by modulating with the lips the way
air comes out of the mouth.
Many people I know have confusion regarding how to pronounce the 5th column
in the ka cha Ta ta pa series. The sanskrit rules clarify how to pronounce
them.
~na (last of ka varga), ~Na (last of cha varga), Na (last of Ta varga), na
(last of ta varga) and ma (last of pa varga)
These are uttered using the nose + its original aasya prayatna sthaanam
(kaNTha etc.).
Beautiful, isn't it?
*Is 'ra' dantyaM or 'mUrdhajaM' ?*
Another fascinating fact. Normally, the letter 'ra' is pronounced in the
U.S. with a rolling of the tongue upwards (as a mUrdhanya varNa like Ta
varga), whereas in India, we're used to uttering it by barely touching the
tip of the tongue just behind the teeth (as a dantyaM like ta varga). That
means, in India we currently pronounce ra as a dantyaM just like ta-varga.
However according to the paaNini rule, 'ra' and "R^i' are classified under
Ta varga as in "R^i Tu ra ShaaNaam mUrdhaa".
So does it mean that the way Americans pronounce 'ra' is the
sanskrit-stipulated way? or am I missing something here?

Namaskar, I am humbled by the nature of this discussion group. Should my
inquiry bear no fruit at all, I shall still give praise to the charitable
Lord Shiva for bringing my attention to such an auspicious community .
I am a 25 year old male and live in the bible belt / mid-western USA ,
Kansas to be specific. Here, we have no access to like minded individuals as
Christianity reigns as the supreme dominator of our community. This is why I
am so grateful to have been shown this amazing group of beings devoted to
divine consciousness and the sacred tongue.
I would like to share more about myself with the community but perhaps I
should get to my question, which I desperately seek an answer to.
I have been studying the branches of vedanga in hopes of developing a
greater understanding of vedic wisdom, the sacred language & to grow closer
to the divine. My resources for an education of Sanskrit Grammar are limited
to the internet & a used copy of Arthur A. Macdonell's book 'A Sanskrit
Grammar : For Students'
I have developed a great passion for comprehending the devotional hymns
composed by sri adi shankaracharya, which directs my focus more towrads
chandas vedanga (metering), I understand that Nirukta, Shiksha and
especially Vyakarana Vedanga may more approriate prerequisites to such great
understanding.
My Question is this: I am uneducated on the process of compounding two words
in sanskrit. I would like to know how to compound the name Shiva , of
obvious reference and the word Aushadhi (referring to a medicinal
herb/psychotropic/shamanic plant),
I have some understanding of transliteration and have been trying to learn
using Spokensanskrit.de and ITRANS. Based upon my best guess after reviewing
different possibilities , I write it as : shivaushadhi , or shivaaushadhi
and in devanagari like the results here:

I apologize if I have not worded my question coherently but I am very new to
undestanding this language and system of writing. I am greatly humbled by

I myself am an avid student of the Internet-Guru:-) and profit enormously from
the discussions and posts of the fellow Sanskrit lovers on the Sanskrit Mailing
List. My main field of interest too is chhanda. My favourite metres are toTaka
(the most beautiful one being of course the toTakAsshTakam

p~nchachAmaram. They remind me of anapaest and iamb metre respectively (my
favourites in the Western prosody). They seem to have intrinsic melodies which
go naturally with their regular rhythms. The beauty is overwhelming.

I apologize if I have not worded my question coherently but I am very new to
undestanding this language and system of writing. I am greatly humbled by the
passionate experts within this community and acknowledge your time as valuable.
Please know that I would not ask a question before trying to resolve it on my
own.
I greatly appreciate anytime spent in helping me understand. Perhaps this
process may be difficult to explain in great technical detail but I would
appreciate the slightest bit of help. If one could please inform me how to
properly combined these two words , it would enable me to have a sort of
'answer key' for finding the solution on my own.
Bless You All for your sacred time. In honor of this community and my respect
for each member , I will give great praise to Kaalbhairava for the proper
effecient utilization of time so that we may not waste even a single moment.
