When I read the passionate contributions made by the scholarly fraternity on
this site, I realize I am too dim, dull and dumb to say anything bust must
humbly state what our teacher taught us some 65 years ago in school and I think
the validity of his statement does not seem to have changed or diiminshed till
date. He had said that language is just a means for commnication and so a
language is as good or as bad, as rich or as poor, as divine or as satanic as
the person using it. And when we say 'the user', it is his mind, his intellect,
his upbringing, the social set-up he comes from. his philosophical 'world view'
or perhaps his 'need of the hour'.

As a western scholarly linguist and Indologist I have come in contact
with says, if one believes that the first sound was 'AUM' and it came from HIM,
or if one believes in the Biblical declaration that first there was Word, and
the Word was with God, and then the Word was God, the intelligent Indians and
Indologists must accept that all languages are equally 'gIrwANI'. He further
says that there is, necessarily, no direct link between the sound units of
speech and those of any writing system devised to represent them. Sounds are
continuous, ephemeral and broadcast multi-dimensionally in the air; letters of
the alphabet (or their equivalents) are discontinuous, potentially permanent
and represented in two dimensional texts.

This seems to make a perfect case for encouraging spoken Sanskrit as a means of
communication, without attaching any 'ornamental adjectives' like divine etc to
the language. Then maybe after decades (or some generations later) Sanskrit may
become a natural 'mother tongue'of at least some!

Having said all that, I love the language and have joined classes for spoken
Sanskrit. I am 73 young.
Submitted in all humility...Shreyas

Subject: Re: [Sanskrit] specifying language details in the Indian Census form

For the purpose of the census, I would probably give a factually accurate
statement regarding the languages I speak at home.

I speak my regional language with my mother and my father. Other Indian
languages that I speak with confidence are Hindi and English.

I am an elementary student of Sanskrit, moving it to a higher rank than the
three languages mentioned above would be merely lying on my part.

It would be different if the census form had a field for "what languages would
you like to speak in addition to your current skills?" In that case I might
consider answering "Sanskrit" within a list of languages.

Hi All,

Seeing great activity in our forum, keep up the good work, friends!!!

Just this idea struck me..... why cant we volunteer to make the Sanskrit
language available in Google Translate tool (or in any Google service for
that matter)

This translate tool is a great place to learn languages...

what do you think?

Please let me know your views.

Dear Sri Sukumar,

Its a great idea to incorporate Sanskrit language in Google translation
features. It will be of great and it will be of immense help to promote the
language world wide. It should percolate first among our people who care for
it and once it is done. It will take wings.

with regards

krishnan
