This is an opportunity to join the Global Marketing and Information
Capabilities team within American Express Technology. We are building an
energetic new team of high-performing Software Engineers. Join our team if
you have the talent and desire to deliver innovative payment products and
services at a rapid pace, serving our customers seamlessly across physical,
digital, mobile, and social media! Engineers that join our Technology team
will deliver exciting next-generation capabilities for targeting prospects
on the web with display advertisements. This team develops Big Data and
batch/real-time analytical solutions, by innovative use of leading
technologies such as Hadoop, MapReduce, Hive, and Pig. This group is nimble
and creative, with the power to shape our product roadmap. Responsibilities
include: • Serving as a core member of an agile team that designs and
develops software applications, builds test automation tools, and drives
user story analysis and elaboration. • Owning all Technical aspects of
Software Development for assigned modules and components. • Performing
hands-on development, conducting code reviews and testing, updating
automation tools, and creating proofs of concept. • Driving continuous
improvement in applications, through use of consistent development
practices and tools, and through ongoing design and code refactoring. •
Collaborating with Senior Engineers and Architects to solve existing needs,
identify exciting opportunities, and predict future challenges. • Working
closely with Senior Engineers and Architects to prioritize and manage
Technical requirements, known defects, and issues. • Managing and
escalating impediments, risks, issues, and changes tied to module and
component development. • Being a “rebel with a cause”, looking beyond the
obvious improvement and development opportunities. • Educating colleagues
on industry trends and new technologies.

Qualifications This high energy Engineer must have: • B.S. or M.S. Degree
in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other Technical discipline,
or equivalent work experience. • Software Development experience,
preferably with large-scale real-time applications. • Demonstrated hands-on
expertise in Java application design, development, and automated testing,
preferably in an agile environment. • Core competencies in Big Data and
distributed systems, including data storage and management, searching,
scheduling, logging, serialization, or modeling technologies. (e.g., HDFS,
HBase, Sqoop, Ozie, Flume, Avro, Lucene, SOLR, ElasticSearch, Talend Open
Studio for Big Data). • Experience with machine learning and/or data
mining. • Experience with Web UI, caching, or graph/document database
technologies, including AJAX, Memcached, and MongoDB. • Experience
implementing REST or SOAP web services, including design, testing, plus and
hands-on experience with serialization. • Experience and with data
structures, algorithms, design patterns, and object-oriented design. •
Experience with parallel programming, concurrent programming, and
multi-threading. • Experience with database query optimization and
indexing. • Experience with PMML is a plus. • Knowledge of Apache Storm and
Apache Spark is a plus. • Knowledge of functional programming is a plus.•
Daily experience with source control, automated build systems, and bug
tracking systems is strongly preferred. • Ability to think abstractly and
deal with ambiguous or under-defined problems. • A strong will to win and
drive results, with a proven ability to overcome internal and external
barriers to achieve results. • High levels of energy, engagement, and
ownership. Positive attitude is an absolute must. We place great importance
on doing what is right, what is best and what is innovative, and we
continue seeking people to champion these values and beliefs as we grow.
The world’s a big place, filled with big ideas and amazing people, and we
want the best of them here at American Express. We’re interested in where
you came from, but we’re even more excited about where you will go with
American Express.

Ideally, they want a Big Data Engineer who is a java developer, and also
has good development knowledge with Hadoop / Hive / Pig (doesn’t need to be
all three of course, but one of those three would be great). This group is
doing a lot of processing an analytics, so they need to have that type of
mindset. They have been seeing candidates who have more architectural
knowledge or ETL, rather than development.

Secondly, these are some trade-offs/preferences appropriate for
these postings. If there are other areas where your team sees the
opportunity for trade-offs, please let me know.

   1. *Prefer candidates with strong advanced Java
skills, rather than intermediate-level candidates with a diversified skill
   set.*
   2. *Candidates do not need to have management or people leader
experience.* Leadership can take many forms -- if he or she is a strong
individual contributor, their technical skills will help them lead by
   example
