The Advise-a-Student Program is alive and well. The number of students who avail themselves of this service is on the rise. If you have students with questions you can't answer or topics in which you feel unqualified to give guidance, hook them up with an expert. See page 73 of the Handbook for instructions and mail applications to Ted Bartlett, Lincoln School, MR #33. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. 10/23/99 11/03/00 Some of the Regions have made arrangements for Bilingual Judges. If you wish to volunteer as such or have students who need this service, please contact your Regional Coordinator. Be sure to also notify Geri Blakely (553-6238) the City Science Fair Credentials Chairperson, if the student advances to the City Science Fair. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. Experimental Error: Apparently many judges have complained at the State Fair that students do not consider the experimental error associated with their measurements and data collection. As a result, last year IJAS included a section on 'Estimating Experimental Error' in the guidelines. See page 6 of the 2001 CSSF Science Fair Handbook for an example of how to introduce this concept to your classes. Supposedly, the judges will be instructed to consider whether or not students have addressed this issue. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. Abstract, Safety Sheet, and Endorsements (if applicable) must be displayed on the FRONT of the students' poster board. This was only recommended in the past but is now required. See bottom of pages 53, 55, 58, 60, 63, and 65 in the Participants Handbook. If students feel that these documents take up too much room on their displays, allow them to reduce the size (please don't go beyond 50%--I have to be able to read them) or stack the documents one on top of the other so that I can flip through them. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. Every year some students work on projects involving hair and teeth. If your students go this route this year ask them a couple of questions. Did the hair (teeth) come from a human or non-human vertebrate? I think so. Do you need to get a human or non-human endorsement? You betcha. Can you display the teeth (hair) at the fair? I don't think so. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. To unsubscribe, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For more information: http://home.sprintmail.com/~mikelach/subscribe.html. That 'no animals on display' rule pertains to humans also. Last year someone tried to slip a classmate in as the subject of her behavioral study-forget about it. And while we are on the subject, leave all those microorganisms home too. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. Animal experimentation is always a sticky topic at Science Fair time. The Science Fair Handbook offers some guidelines when helping students choose the types of animals to study. The basic aims of experiments involving animals are to achieve an understanding of life processes and to further human knowledgeÂ…It is strongly recommended that certain living organisms, such as plants, yeast, protozoans, planaria, daphnia, rotifera, paramecia, earthworms, snails, insects, and other invertebrates be used. But don't forget; the animal cannot be displayed at the fair--Science Fair LOVES plants. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List. Today's tip concerns HS students who are eligible for the International Science and Engineering Fair. Be sure students apply for ISEF forms by mail from Nancy Toomey, Kellogg School, MR #49--DO NOT CALL. Forms are also available on-line at http://www.sciserv.org and must be completed prior to the start of research. See pages 9,10,13,15,16,17,35-8,41,58,60,63, 65 of the 2002 SF Handbook for additional ISEF information. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List.
