Dear Chicago Public School Teacher: The Chicago Systemic Initiative (CSI) and Northwestern University are spearheading the development of new K-5 and Middle School mathematics and science professional development courses. Over the past several months Northwestern University faculty, CPS staff, and CPS teachers, in collaboration with faculty from University of Chicago, University of Illinois, DePaul University, Loyola University, and Northeastern Illinois University diligently worked to design mathematics and science pilot courses. The courses are designed to combine mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge to meet the needs of teachers. We are pleased to report that the first of several pilots available. It is important to note that a pilot course is a course that is a work in progress. It is a complete course and participants will get graduate credit for completing the course, but a pilot course is part of a research and design process. Consequently, we are seeking Chicago public school teachers who are willing to not only take the course, but also be a part of a pilot research study that evaluates the course. Participation in the pilot should not only enhance your content knowledge, but it should also be viewed as a way to ensure that high quality new courses are being created for all teachers in Chicago. If you register for this course, you are registering for a pilot course and will be asked to participate in the research design. If you do not wish to participate in the research study, you should wait and sign up for the courses at a later date. I.
