There are two that I like.
1. The fire breathing pumpkin: Basically carve a pumpkin as you usually
would and cut a small hole in the back of it. Stick some tygon tubing in
the hole and leave about 3 or feet of tubing sticking out of the pumpkin.
Place a candle inside the pumkin. Using a funnel, pour some lycopodium
powder in the tubing (no more than a couple grams will be necessary). Flour
or powdered creamer will work. Light the candle on the inside and replace
the lid. Blow through the tube and fire will burst through the front of the
pumpkin.
2. Genie in a Bottle: Obtain some 12% or 30% Hydrogen peroxide. Pour
about 30-40 mL into a flask with a lid. Next take about a gram of MnO2 or
KI and place it in the middle of a chem-wipe or a piece of kleenex. Bundle
it up with string so that it looks like a tea bag. Leave one end of the
string long. Place the 'tea bag' inside the bottle with the string hanging
out so that it doesn't fall all the way in. Use the cap to secure it. Tell
your students you are going to unleash the power of genie and remove the
cap. The bag will fall in, and a large plume of steam will pour out of the
bottle. It will get pretty hot. It works great if you cover the bottle in
aluminum foil, so that its contents are a mystery.
Here is a link for some more good ones.

Subject: [CPS Science]Re: Halloween Chemistry Demos
Hi -
I know that last year someone circulated a list of several fun, easy
Halloweeny demos for chem classes on this listserve. Unfortunately I
misplaced mine. Does anyone still have a copy of it? I am mostly
interested in demos that use readily available chem materials (ie not dry
ice
or Mercury chloride).
Thanks,
Alison Terczak
