Dhivan,

Because of a colleague who insisted that we switch from EL to SuSE, we licensed SLES and I installed OpenSUSE on my laptop -- but left SL on my workstation. SUSE never in fact provided us with SLES (although we paid the license) and OpenSUSE simply was not as reliable as SL. For example, I prefer Mate over current Gnome or current KDE. Mate never worked on OpenSUSE, and I could get no support for it. Likewise, I was having significant difficulty with VirtualBox on OpenSUSE. The major fault seemed to be that there is no OpenSUSE equivalent to this SL Users list to which one ask "technical" questions and get either direct answers or confirmation that there is an issue that needs to be addressed, or for workarounds (application X does not work, but application W has essentially the same functionality and does work). Also, having compared RPM and yum with the SuSE similar functionality, yum seems easier to use and more predictable -- although I am certain that those in the SuSE camp (using "patterns" if I recall the SuSE terminology) would have just the opposite opinion.

I had used CentOS before switching to SL. The initial primary reason I switched to SL is that SL, once it become a superset of EL, not a non-conforming port, is that SL is professionally developed and supported by staff at Fermilab and CERN -- these are paid professionals, not "volunteers" -- although it appears SL 7 strictly is ported by Fermilab staff. The other alternative is the Princeton / Institute for Advanced Study port, but SL seems more stable, more rapidly deployed, and this list -- from which one can get meaningful technical advice -- is a big plus.

Yasha,

How is the move back going for you? Are you happy?
I am asking for an update, if possible, as I am at crossroads myself..
What is the main attraction for you over the CentOS, please?

Thank you in advance and Happy New Years!
