I know he took lots of heat for winning the Hugo and Nebula awards
but I've never read his work. Is it worth a look?

Not very well. The books were much bigger in scope and Henry wasn't
the typical fey vampire.
Plus the way the series ended is one of the most heartbreaking things
I've read in a long time. If Laurell K. Hamilton was half as brave as
Tanya Huff her Anita Blake series wouldn't have degenerated
Rasalom from The Keep wasn't a vamp. He was something far worse.

I just read the Wikipedia summery and it is helping me to remember. I went
through a vampire/immortal phase and that was one of the books I read at the
time. I guess I somehow mixed that book up with the vampire books I read at
