I liked The God Engines quite a bit. There was enough meat there for a full
length novel and the ending was a bit too grim dark. I really want a full
length sequel. The new status quo will lead to lots of new questions and
adventures.
I thought the comfort women(drawing a blank on their

John Scalzi has a novella out called THE GOD ENGINES, that's up for a Hugo this
year. Sort of fantasy with tech; set in a spacefaring society that doesn't
actually have much technology. Instead they use enslaved gods as the engines
for their spaceships, and magic given to them by their own god
Angela, the way you phrased that made a neuron in my brain flip states.
There's something in that vein, but I can't remember it. I'm thinking on it,
and I'll put it into the database, along with a few others.

Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos might be a good fit.
The futuretech is there in huge doses, there are a group of heroes who are on
the journey for various reasons and there are huge battles. Plus the Shrike is
an awesome big bad.

sci-fi by authors of color? I did my bit The One Hundred Thousand Kingdoms,

Barnes is always a favorite. My favorite sare the Lion's Blood series, Iron
Shadows, Street Lethal and The Legacy of Heorot and Beowulf's Children with
Niven and Pournelle. His last couple were good but not my favorites.
Barnes' wife Tananarive Due is awesome as well. Her work is more
Thanks large for the Acacia memory elbow! I was having a severe brain cramp

That's a good point. I guess I need to think about the kinds of books I used
to read...they were probably more fantasy, but I think I want something with a
little techy edge to it too. So like Lord of the Rings (all which I've read)
with space ships and other planets.
MEANWHILE, I took the
If that's the case Martin's recommendation of Perdido Street Station is spot on
for you. Cherie Priest's Boneshaker might be a good fit too.

I am currently recommending The Ten Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemison.
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Convoluted without being dense, Jemisin's engaging debut grabs
readers right from the start. Yeine desires nothing more than a normal life in
her barbarian homeland of Darr. But her
