Did George Luca break thecanon with
this film? If you figure it incontext w/ Return of the Jedi.
There's a line in Jedi which entirely
blows something in Sith outta the water, a line in Jedi that makes
Sith's ending difficult to see as a straight line. Watch jedi esp. at
the end when vader is dead, before you go see the movie.

Of all the crimes of humanity, this was the worst: that servos were created with no ultimate sense of purpose except to serve their destroyers. Even those who achieved sentience were still enslaved from within."
From Daughter of Elysium by Joan Slonczewski

We are for breeding purposes: we aren't concubines, geisha girls, courtesans. On the contrary: everything possible has been done to remove us from that category. There is supposed to be nothing entertaining about us, no room is to be permitted for the flowering of secret lusts; no special favors are to be wheedled, by them or us, there are to be no toeholds for love. We are two-legged wombs, that's all: sacred vessels, ambulatory chalices.
From The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

[scifinoir2] Fw: Our entire way of life is at stake

2005-05-21 Thread Amy Harlib

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Important stuff. PLEASE READ THIS AND ACT TO SAVE WHAT LITTLE DEMOCRACY
WE HAVE!
Subject: Jesse Jackson: Our entire way of life is at stake

Jesse Jackson speaks out on judicial filibusters and the nuclear
option.

 http://www.suntimes.com/output/jesse/cst-edt-jesse17.html

Our entire way of life is at stake
 May 17, 2005
 BY JESSE JACKSON

And now the ''nuclear option.'' Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill
Frist vows to blow up the Senate by getting the Republican majority to
outlaw any filibuster against President Bush's judicial nominees.
Democrats
have approved 208 of Bush's 218 nominees, but are blocking 10 as too
extreme. That is unacceptable to Frist.

Bush might sensibly have defused the situation in the hope of moving
forward on the business of the American people, but instead he threw
gasoline on the fire. In a direct insult to his opposition, he renominated
the same handful of extremists previously blocked. Now he demands an
up-or-down vote on them -- essentially ordering Frist to blow up the
Senate.
As in the run-up to the war in Iraq, he's intent on winning, with little
sense of the costs and consequences of what he's driving the country into.

Outside groups on both sides are mobilizing. The right of the Republican
Party has called blocking a handful of Bush's nominees an assault on
''people of faith.'' (The president apparently is so infallible that to
question even 10 of more than 200 nominees is to risk eternal damnation.)
Liberals have started touting the filibuster as the bedrock of democracy.

But this debate isn't about freedom of religion. And it isn't about the
filibuster. It's about the judges and the direction of the country.

Bush's mantra is that he simply wants judges who will follow the law, not
legislate their own will from the bench. He wants judicial restraint, not
judicial activism. But that is simply nonsense, and the president knows
it.
Bush isn't nominating conservative judges as his father did; he's
nominating
radicals, vetted by the right-wing Federalist Society, and dedicated to
advancing the movement's agenda through the courts. He's naming judges who
will overturn precedents that the conservative movement doesn't like --
from
Roe vs. Wade that gave women the right of choice, to Brown vs. Board of
Education that outlawed segregation, to the core jurisprudence of the New
Deal.

This is central to the right's battle to remake America in its image.
Whenever a movement pushes for dramatic social change, it naturally runs
up
against the status quo bias of the courts. The New Deal movement ran
headlong into the free market doctrines that conservative judges had
implanted into the Constitution. Those doctrines made labor unions an
illegal restraint of trade. They deemed the 40-hour workweek, or
health-and-safety regulations, to be unconstitutional infringements on the
market. For Roosevelt and the New Deal to wrench America into the modern
age, new doctrine was needed. The result: a brutal struggle over the
courts.

When the civil rights movement challenged apartheid in America, it ran
into
the racist doctrines that segregationist judges had implanted into the
Constitution. Once more, those doctrines -- separate but equal -- had to
be
overturned. And a Republican chief justice of the Supreme Court, Earl
Warren, led the court in doing so -- and the courts came under vicious
attack. ''Impeach Earl Warren'' signs went up across the South. And a
right-wing backlash against the courts began.

What does the right-wing movement want from judges? It wants judges who
will overturn the precedent set by Roe and outlaw abortion. It wants an
end
to affirmative action, with many saying the Brown ruling that outlawed
 segregation was wrongly decided.

But it wants much more than this. The Federalist Society is dominated by
an
obscure sect that believes in the ''Constitution in exile.'' Essentially,
adherents argue for a return to the 19th century jurisprudence of the
Gilded
Age -- calling on judges to overturn the New Deal jurisprudence that
empowered Congress to regulate the economy, defend workers, protect the
environment and consumers, and hold corporations accountable. No, I'm not
 kidding, and neither are they.

Will the right be able to use a current Republican majority in the Senate
to ensconce zealots on the bench to enforce their agenda over the next
decades? This answer will say much about what kind of country we will
become. No one should be on the sidelines in this one.

[scifinoir2] Fw: Act Now: The Nuclear Option is on its way!

2005-05-21 Thread Amy Harlib

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

  May 18, 2005

This is
it: This week, Senate Majority
Leader Bill Frist activated the launch sequence on the nuclear
option as he directed the Senate to
take up the nomination of Priscilla
Owen.A vote on whether
to change the rules governing filibusters of judicial nominations
will likely come late this week or early next
week.
If
Senator Frist succeeds, the Senate minority will no longer be able
to use the filibuster to block judicial nominees, and the path will be cleared for the confirmation of all
the Administration’s controversial nominees,
including any future nominees to the Supreme Court.

Take These Three Easy Steps to Protect
the Courts TODAY!
•Step
#1: Call your Senators. Please call your
Senators to tell them to vote “NO” on
the Nuclear Option, and to stop the confirmations of
nominees like Owen and Janice Rogers Brown who are hostile to
women’s rights. You can call
202-244-3121 or find their D.C.
office numbers.
•Step #2: Email your
Senators.You can use our
sample email, or write your own.
•Step #3: Ask five
friends to contact their Senators. Make a
personal commitment to make sure that five friends, family members,
or colleagues contact their Senators as well.

Senator Frist
has made clear that he intends to use two female nominees to trigger
the “nuclear option,” and some of his colleagues have suggested that
those who oppose these nominees are opposed to progress for
women. But what would really
threaten progress to women is the confirmation of nominees like
these, who are overtly hostile to women’s
rights:

•Priscilla
Owen
has sought to restrict women’s reproductive rights at nearly every
turn during her tenure on the Texas Supreme Court, ignoring state
law in doing so. In one case, she interpreted a Texas law so

I caught that online trailer as well, and I was breathless. Looks even BETTER than LOTR, in terms of scope. I take it that WETA's learned a few things from the LOTR experience.Keith Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

At the "Revenge of the Sith" airing today, Isaw a trailer for "The Chronicles of Narnia--The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". I must say I was impressed. Thescenes I saw looked great. The scenery, the mythological creatures, Aslan the Lion King--all caught my attention. There was a huge battle full of all sorts of minotaurs, centaurs, and others, that reminded me of something fromLord of the Rings. Checking the Web, I see why. This pic is directed by New Zealander Andrew Adamson (director of "Shrek" and "Shrek 2"), and effects are handled by WETA, the FX group created by Peter Jackson. No wonder everything looks so good!

Go to this site: http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/narnia/index.html
Let the doorknob rotate a full circuit, which brings up the wardrobe. Click on the wardrobe to enter the Narnia site. At the site, select "The Movie". Another screen appears. Here, click on "Production Room" in the lower righthand corner. Finally, in the Production Room, click on the TV set. This brings up a great section complete with the official trailer, and some interestingbehind-the-scenes stuff, including interviews with the director and production execs, and shots of the sets in New Zealand. Once done here, spend some time in the Production Room and click on the other objects there, which bring up more information screens.

I think I have another movie to get me excited. Can't wait 'til December 9th!

drafting a treaty thatwould prohibit interfering with unarmed satellites, taking away anyjustification for putting weapons in space to protect them."The United States has a huge lead in the space field - it can afford totry out the multilateral approach,'' said Jonathan Dean, a former U.S.ambassador and an adviser on global security issues. The Union's demand comes as the administration of President Bush isreviewing the U.S. space policy doctrine. Some scientists worry that thereview will set out a more aggressive policy that could lead to thegreater militarization of space. On Wednesday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters thatthe policy review was not considering the weaponization of space. But hesaid new threats to U.S. satellites have emerged in the years since theU.S. space doctrine was last reviewed in 1996, and those satellites mustbe protected."There are changes that have occurred over
the last eight or nine years, and there are countries that have taken an interest in space, McClellansaid. "And they have looked at things that could - or technologies thatcould - threaten our space systems. And so you obviously need to take thatinto account when you're updating the policy.''The Bush administration has also included some money in the budget forspace-based weapons programs to defend satellites, strike ground targetsand defend against missile attacks, said Laura Grego, a scientist with theunion.Any complete weapons system in space would be very expensive, running intothe many billions of dollars. Developing a shield to defend against asingle missile attack would require deploying 1,000 space-basedinterceptors and cost anywhere between $20 billion and $100 billion, saidDavid Wright, a union scientists and co-author of a recent report on thefeasibility of space weapons. And such a system would require
a huge expansion of U.S. launchingcapability. The United States currently launches between 10-12 largerockets a year, while with space interceptors, it would need to launchmany times more that each year.Wright argued that space-based ground attack systems were not yetpractical either. One, dubbed "Rods from God'' - which would fire rods oftungsten from space - would cost 50-100 times as much as a similar attackfrom the ground."The fact that it's still being considered I think suggests that there'ssome sort of emotional attachment to it for putting weapons in spacerather than a hard-nosed analysis,'' Wright said.Any such move would also likely draw swift international condemnation. In2002, after the United States withdrew from the 1972 Anti-BallisticMissile Treaty, China and Russia submitted a proposal for a newinternational treaty to ban weapons in outer space. But the United States has said it sees no need
for any new space armscontrol agreements. It is party to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, whichprohibits stationing weapons of mass destruction in space."Excuse me while I whip this out."Cleavon Little , "Blazing Saddles"__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Well,
in current mainstream X books, Kitty is definitely shown as Jewish. She's part
of the staff at the Xavier Institute, and always wears a Star of David on a
necklace. You must mean "X-Men Unlimited", which has all but sanitized many
aspects of the X-Men characters' unique identities, such as Storm being more
Americanized. I wouldn't be surprised if they've given Kitty's religion
short shrift.

Hersh Sees Democracy in Peril in U.S.
  By John Nichols
  May 17, 2005

Seymour Hersh, arguably the greatest journalist of
 our time and certainly
the most necessary, joined me last week at a
 University of Illinois
conference that asked the question: Can freedom of
 the press survive media
 consolidations?

  The Pulitzer-winning journalist reworked the
 question, asking: Can
freedom of the press survive the Bush presidency?

No one is sharper in his rebukes of U.S. officials
 than Hersh, the man who
exposed the My Lai massacre, CIA domestic spying, the
 role of the United
States in the 1973 coup in Chile that deposed elected
 President Salvador
Allende, Israel's nuclear ambitions and, most
 recently, the failures of the
U.S. government in the pursuit of Osama bin Laden and
 the prison torture
 scandal at Abu Ghraib.

Hersh pulls no punches. Henry Kissinger, he says,
 lies like other
people breathe. Yet, Hersh adds, he wishes the U.S.
 government had a
Kissinger now because then there would be somebody
 (in Washington) with a
 scheme up his sleeve.

The veteran journalist, who has been writing for the
 New Yorker since the
Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade
 Center and the
Pentagon, says the United States today is in
 uncharted waters, with
leadership that does not begin to understand the world
 but is playing the
games of geopolitics as if it did.

Of President Bush, he says, This is really a zealot
 - somebody who
believes in what he's doing and has no information.

Hersh suggests that, unlike Kissinger, who lied but
did so from a basis of
knowledge, Bush spreads misinformation that the
 president, himself, actually
 thinks is true.

The vacuum in which Bush operates sees him gathering
 information about the
war constantly. Hersh has no doubt that the president
 and his aides knew
that acts of torture were being committed by the U.S.
 in Iraq and elsewhere.
Did they know what was happening? Of course they
 did, says the journalist,
who notes the president follows the war closely,
 getting daily detailed
 briefings.

The problem, says Hersh, is that Bush gets
 information tailored to satisfy
his biases and to mirror the warped view of public
 affairs peddled by Vice
President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald
 Rumsfeld and other
 adherents of the neoconservative line.

Reality gets lost in such a circumstance. Bush,
 Cheney, Rumsfeld and
others in the administration continue to push the view
 that the war is going
well. Yet it is not, as the rising death toll in that
 country illustrates.
Indeed, argues Hersh, who knows a great deal about
 U.S. military adventures
gone awry, This war is going to reverberate in ways
 that we cannot begin to
see. It's going to be devastating for us all.

Unfortunately, Hersh does not have an easy answer
 for the current crisis.
I don't know how we're going to get out of this, he
 says. We're not going
to find leadership in Congress. ... The media, for the
 most part, is not
 doing its job.

And that is what has Hersh really worried. The man
 whose investigative
reporting was central to changing the course of the
 nation during the
Vietnam War, the Watergate era and other critical
 junctures in recent
American history says that it is getting harder and
 harder to break through
the wall of entertainment news - Michael Jackson's
 trial, the runaway
bride - and get the country focused on critical
 issues such as whether
Americans want Iraqis and others to be tortured in
 their name.

We need to do something different, says Hersh, who
 argues that it is
necessary restore a measure of seriousness to
 mainstream media and to
explore new options for alternative media.

The issue at stake is not one of administration, nor
 even one of war. It
is not even the question of whether

But what really caught my attention was "Neon Genesis Evangeline", which is on

"Black Sheep", about deadly, carnivorous sheep?? The image gallery shows one of
