[scifinoir2] Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle

2005-06-09 Thread KeithBJohnson
Now *this* has me excited! Another film from the master, Miyazaki! For those
who may not know of him, Miyazaki is an animation legend. His films hold box
office records in Japan, making hundreds of millions of dollars. Animators the
world over worship him (Disney animators fight for the honor to work with him,
and study his work all the time). Miyazaki almost single-handedly keeps alive
my faith in the future of animation, for several reasons:

-He tells intelligent, moving stories that are devoid of unnecessary slapstick
or (shudder!) modern cultural references that'll grow stale with time
-His protagonists are often girls and women who are strong and capable, not eye
candy (remember the voluptuous Pochahantas? Why was that needed?)
-He still works in 2D! Gorgeous, breathtaking 2D animation. As someone who
laments the death of 2D in America at the hands of CGI, I love that fact.
-He's never used Robin Williams' manic voice acting!!!

Note that a guy from Pixar's doing the English voice casting. Interesting, as
that studio is known for making quality films (albeit mostly CGI), and they do
have possibly one of the last great 2D animation guys in Brad Bird. And
distribution is through Disney, like his previous American releases. Makes me
ponder the question again: is 2D animation dying in America because the public
doesn't want it, or is the public supporting CGI because that's what the
studios are giving them?

Check out all the links below. The first is the official Disney site. The
second has four clips from the film--all are breathtaking. The third's a site
with links to more info on the whole thing. The film opens this Friday in very
limited release, only a handful of theatres across the country (two in
Atlanta!). I saw no releases in Jacksonville, New York, or Austin. There's a
wider release on June 17. Don't miss it!

Plot Summary:

Academy Award®-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) takes
moviegoers on an amazing new animated adventure that celebrates the power of
love to transform and the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of
adversity. Brimming with a blend of imagination, humor, action, and romance,
Howl's Moving Castle recently played to great acclaim at the 2004 Venice Film
Festival, and has become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time in Japan –
earning more than $193 million at the box office and still counting. A
distinguished cast of actors, under the direction of Pixar's Pete Docter
(Monsters, Inc.), lend their vocal talents to this English-language version
of the film. Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer), an average teenage girl working
in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept
off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl (voiced by
Christian Bale), and is subsequently turned into a 90-year old woman (voiced by
screen legend and two-time Oscar® nominee Jean Simmons) by the vain and
conniving Wicked Witch of the Waste (voiced by screen legend and Oscar® nominee
Lauren Bacall). Embarking on an incredible odyssey to lift the curse, she finds
refuge in Howl's magical moving castle where she becomes acquainted with Markl,
Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed fire demon named Calcifer (voiced by Billy
Crystal). Sophie's love and support comes to have a major impact on Howl, who
flies in the face of orders from the palace to become a pawn of war and instead
risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom. Extraordinary characters,
inventive imagery, and stunning artistry make this latest masterpiece from the
visionary Miyazaki an unforgettable filmgoing experience. (Limited)

And my wife was stunned the time I yelled K'plah! to a dude dressed
like a Klingon at a restaurant! Funny!

Great! Really suspenseful. I thought Clarice Starling was--wait, I don't
know *how* I mixed those two up. I'll keep watching but I don't think it'll
last.
