[scifinoir2] Buffy Takes on Alice in Wonderland as Queen

2005-06-27 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has moved on
from slaying vampires to becoming the Queen of Hearts in a new movie
adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. The actress will star in Alice, a
big-screen adaptation of a video game based on Lewis Carroll's classic
tales, according to the trade publication Hollywood Reporter. The popular
electronic game, American McGee's Alice, has the famous fictional character
returning to Wonderland as a troubled adult, seeking to confront her
childhood fears and cope with her parents' tragic death.

now Yahoo as of Midnight 6/23/05 will delete the

Re: [scifinoir2] Pentagon Creating Database of High School Students

2005-06-27 Thread Amy Harlib

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
  This is way overstepping boundaries!
  Amy

Jun. 23) - As U.S. military action in Iraq and Afghanistan continues, the
Pentagon -- which has fallen short of its recruitment goals -- is using new
  means to find potential recruits.
Working with the private marketing firm BeNow, Inc. of Wakefield, Mass., the
Pentagon has created a huge database of millions of high school students,
  aged 16 to 18.

The database includes names, dates of birth, genders, addresses, Social
Security numbers, e-mail addresses, ethnicity, telephone numbers, and even
grade
  point averages.
The purpose, according to a Defense Department statement, is to assist in
  direct marketing recruiting efforts.
  Privacy Advocates Concerned
But privacy advocates say it violates a federal law that restricts the
government's ability to gather personal information. They say they
understand the
military's need to recruit but this type of information-gathering goes too
  far.
It's very secretive, said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the
Electronic Privacy Information Center. It feels a lot like a big brother
proposal,
and it really should be stopped.
The Pentagon -- struggling to recruit in the face of the daily violence in
Iraq -- says the database is a way to remain competitive in a marketplace
where young people have a lot of choices.
Officials say they will handle the data with care.
We always worry about privacy issues, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
  said.
A growing number of parents were already upset about the military's
recruiting techniques. A little-known provision in the 2002 No Child Left
Behind
education law requires every public school to provide the military with the
names, addresses and phone numbers of students.
Last month, Louise Wannier went to her daughter's high school to submit an
opt-out letter, which prohibits recruiters from accessing personal
  information.
She learned today about the new database, which may have much more
information on her daughter than she'd ever imagined.
I thought I had protected my kid, she said. This is a direct violation of
  family privacy and parental rights.
Privacy advocates and at least one congressman are now fighting to stop the
gathering of information for the database.

[scifinoir2] Film revenues in decline: This season's disaster movies

2005-06-27 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/film/news/story.jsp?story=650172
As one mega-production after another bombs, Hollywood is suffering the worst
box-office slump in a generation. Is the problem more than just a failure to
produce the right films, asks Andrew Gumbel
Published : 28 June 2005

Every summer, Hollywood goes through the same little comedy. The studio
executives - who have staked reputation, career and tens, if not hundreds,
of millions of dollars on the latest mindless blockbuster they feel sure
will break through to the key target audience of disaffected suburban
teenagers - watch with trepidation and awe as one supposedly sure-fire hit
after another stumbles at the box office.

The real hits, meanwhile, invariably come from somewhere entirely
unexpected - a low-budget buddy comedy, say, or an entirely
counter-intuitive hits such as Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which
no studio executive would have ever bet on making a cent but which earned
more than $600m (£330m) worldwide.

This year, though, is a little different. For sure, the usual quota of
mega-productions has either underperformed or bombed altogether - everything
from Ridley Scott's crusading epic Kingdom of Heaven, to Ron Howard's
Depression-era boxing movie Cinderella Man. But, unusually, nothing much
else has grabbed the imagination of the mass American audience either.

The result is the longest year-on-year box-office slump in memory. This past
weekend was the 18th in a row in which ticket receipts came in lower than
they had in 2004. Nothing like this has happened since detailed records on
movie grosses began a generation ago.

The biggest new release, a wacky movie version of the old television series
Bewitched starring Nicole Kidman, got slammed by the critics and, in spite
of a no-holds-barred publicity push, couldn't even make top billing in the
weekend box-office charts. The number one spot was held instead by last
week's not-quite-blockbuster, Batman Begins, which has done decent but less
than stellar business.

Meanwhile, the film primed to clean up the tween and younger girl market,
Disney's revival of the Herbie sentient car series, Herbie Reloaded, was
also a disappointment, coming in fourth despite the popularity of its star,
Lindsay Lohan.

It has been like this almost every weekend since February. Total box office
is down about 7 per cent on last year. In the period from early May to
mid-June, traditionally a fecund earning period in the United States because
of the Memorial Day holiday, the numbers were down as much as 11 per cent.

Just a handful of films can be said to have performed strongly. Chief among
them is Revenge of the Sith, the sixth and final instalment of George
Lucas's Star Wars saga, which was just about the only thing motivating the
multiplexes to keep the lights burning at the end of last month.

On a more modest scale, Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Twelve, the follow-up to
his reworking of the old Rat Pack caper Ocean's Eleven, made a handsome
return on its backers' investment, as did Meet The Fockers, the lowbrow
follow-up to the equally lowbrow in-law comedy Meet The Parents, starring
Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.

Otherwise it has been one disaster after another, for reasons that are being
debated ever more hotly on Hollywood studio lots and in the ulcer-inducing
tension of the big shots' executive offices.

It's not just a matter of quality, or critical reception: seemingly
promising prestige projects like The Lords of Dogtown, about the skateboard
and surfing culture of Venice Beach, have fallen away just as surely as a
lazy, dumb shoot-'em-up like XXX: State of the Union.

It's not just a matter of poorly judged marketing, although Russell Crowe,
the star of Cinderella Man, certainly didn't help his movie by throwing a
telephone at an employee at a New York hotel and getting himself arrested on
the film's opening weekend. Ditto Tom Cruise, whose eyebrow-raising antics
on behalf of Scientology and the alleged new love of his life, Katie Holmes,
have raised so many hackles that an organised boycott of his forthcoming War
of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg, is now in full swing.

What, then, is the matter? In Hollywood, there are two broad schools of
thought. The first says that, ultimately, it is about the appeal of the
films, and that the big studios have simply failed to deliver. It is
undeniable that the men and women who green-light $100m productions are
guilty of a spectacular failure of imagination. The movie landscape is
littered with remakes, sequels, screen adaptations of superhero comics and
ideas repackaged from television series popular when the executives, not
their target audience, were young and impressionable.

Not all of these have bombed (otherwise they wouldn't keep making them): the
Spider-Man series, for example, has certainly reaped big financial rewards.
But, taken together, they do form an impression of an industry suffering
either from a failure of

I'm so upset at the end of the last few episodes though.

Who is the faceless paranoid conspiracy guy? Does he have his own comic?
did he ever have a face, and if so, how did he loose it. I've seen him in

I'll still see it. Half the people whose movies I see have issues, so
Cruise is no different. In keeping with his belief system, he's just
being more open about his particular idiosyncracies than some actors who
front all the time. If there's even a chance that Spielberg can pull off
a War of the Worlds that delivers the same impact as the classic George
Pal version--which I watch *every* time it's aired on AE or AMC--then I
have to see it. Besides, Hollywood's been on a good role with stuff like
Kingdom of Heaven, Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins (awesome film!),
and I'd like to keep staying on that train.

  Hi Friends!

Yahoo is deleting groups that have even one member
that does not have their age in the Yahoo Profile. The
reason for this is they are in trouble for Sex Chat
Groups that had underage members in these groups. So
now Yahoo as of Midnight 6/23/05 will delete the
entire group for having any members that do not have
their age in the Yahoo Profile. There is no recovery
for the Group, it will no longer exist.
Please if you love this group, update your Yahoo
Profile to show your age, any age will do, as long as
you are over 18! Very Important!!!

To update your age in your yahoo profile,

  You must log in,
  then go to my account,
  Then click on Edit/Create Profiles
Then click on edit next to your yahoo id
  then fill in your age.

  Hope this helps.

I do not know how much it is true but I suspect it is
as I know there are list hoppers reporting groups who
share adult stuff who are not in their adult area.

I hate to have to do this but I do not want to loose
  my groups.

Please add your age to your profile. If you do now I
will be forced to drop you.

This msg is being passed around to all groups.

RE: [scifinoir2] War of the Worlds-Has Cruise's Meltdown Affected Whether You Will Go See It

2005-06-27 Thread Keith Johnson
I agree. So many writers and actors and directors have issues, if you
stayed away just for that you'd never go to the movies. I don't
patronize any movies by Woody Allen since he basically molested a young,
naive Asian girl who was in all practical purposes being raised as his
daughter. The heart wants what he wants indeed. Sorry but he don't
get my little change. Same for Roman Polanksi, who drugged a girl he
claims he thought was an adult. R. Kelly ain't getting any of my money
either. I'm not a witch hunt kind of guy, but unless there's an
orchestrated fiendish plot against Kelly, I'm leaving him alone.

[scifinoir2] Catch the AE special on Star Wars

2005-06-27 Thread Keith Johnson
There's been surprisingly little Star Wars talk in the group. I guess
few of y'all are fans, and fewer still saw Revenge of the Sith. I
don't consider myself a fan the way I am for Star Trek, but I still
enjoy it. Fan or not, I think you'll like the AE special on the making
of the first film: A New Hope. It's amazing to see how Lucas
singlehandedly pulled this vision together when everyone else--actors,
crew, financial backers--thought he was nuts. At one point Star Wars
almost became a Saturday morning kids' project. A real testament to the
power of persevering with your dreams. Fascinating to watch how ILM
invented the whole FX industry. Funny to watch Hamil, Fisher, and Ford
just laugh and groan through the incredibly stilted and phony sounding
dialogue. And actors working agains blue screens where they don't see
the action that'll be added later is common now, but back then it was
surreal and the actors thought it was hilarious. Also, a real treat to
see people like William The Greatest American Hero Katt, Kurt Russell,
Cindy Williams, and others reading for the parts of Luke, Han, and Leia.

It is the most popular space adventure of all time and one of the most
groundbreaking sagas in Hollywood history. This two-hour AE SPECIAL
PRESENTATION: STAR WARS: EMPIRE OF DREAMS details how the phenomenon
captured imaginations with an irresistible Force and catapulted three
young performers to stardom - Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie
Fisher. But the STAR WARS trilogy didn't just change the way we look at
movies. It changed the way movies are made. What began as a galactic
fairy tale became a success story beyond one man's wildest dreams. While
George Lucas has remained true to his own vision, it's audiences
everywhere who have reaped the rewards ever since May 1977 when
moviegoers first caught sight of that galaxy far, far away. For Lucas,
what began as a quest for creative freedom became a philosophy, a
cultural phenomenon and his own empire of dreams.

The AE SPECIAL PRESENTATION: STAR WARS: EMPIRE OF DREAMS features
riveting movie clips and fascinating screen tests plus interviews with
George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie
Fisher and other cast members.

  Dear Red States

We're ticked off at the way you've treated California, and we've
decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're
taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to
the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.

We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
  get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
  pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
  bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war,
and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If
you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals.

They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for
no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their
children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our
  resources in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most
of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and
condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,
  Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88
percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say
that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved
in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people
with higher morals then we lefties.

By the way, we're taking the good pot, too.
You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

  Sincerely,
  Author Unknown in New California.

RE: [scifinoir2] War of the Worlds-Has Cruise's Meltdown Affected Whether You Will Go See It

2005-06-27 Thread Tracey de Morsella \(formerly Tracey L. Minor\)
I need to correct something. I was not going to see War of the Worlds. Not
because of his crazy antics, but because I prefer to see movies at home.

I think if I had planned on seeing it, I would put it off because, it would
be hard to see him as simply the character. However, while I am not really
a Cruise fan, I LOVED him as the bad guy in collateral and I just saw him
the other night in The Last Samurai, and while my husband and I made jokes a
few times, we were still able to enjoy the movie.
