I use XSV (http://www.ltg.ed.ac.uk/~ht/xsv-status.html) to validate
against a schema (internal or external) with Scite.
A other command line validator (and more) is XmlStarlet
(http://xmlstar.sourceforge.net/).

At work I've been assigned to a project which requires extensive editing
of existing xml and xsl documents. Another unrelated project involves
the creation of new xml documents against existing xsd document. SciTE
edits these files, and with a Lua script I can re-indent a document to
my needs
