Re: [scots-l] music notation
Both of these illustrate my previous point, that some people (mostly dance musicians in my experience) really like having the bar lines and notes aligned. Their reason is that it makes the phrasing of the music clearer, which improves readability. Meanwhile, others voice strong objections to this on aesthetic grounds. My conclusion would be that good music software would cater to both of these disparate crowds, and make such alignment possible for those who like it. This would be more useful than software that imposes one group's preference on the other. It is a bit disappointing that aesthetics and practicality seem to be in opposition here. Ted remarked: | This sounds very similar to the approach taken in the two volumes of | Irish Traditional Music published by CCE Craobh Naithi. It's some of the | clearest notation I've encountered. | Cynthia Cathcart wrote: | ... but in the book I've been working on, I adjusted the placement | of the pick-up notes so that my bars DO line up exactly. It's a book for | beginning players, and I wanted to make clear the repeated | patterns in some of the pieces I chose. ... | My point is, well, yes, the pick up notes make it a little more | challenging, | but it's easily gotten around. And I think it's worth the extra | effort if it makes the music clearer. Re: [scots-l] Balnain House
Tappan wrote: Someone on another list I'm on forwarded this from the Travel in Scotland Newsletter. Have anyone heard about this? Is it true? Balnain House, the Inverness company devoted to promoting Highland music, is to close following financial difficulties running to around £50,000. Billed as the "home of Highland music", Balnain House has been a popular venue for traditional music sessions, workshops and concerts as well as hosting an exhibition of Highland Music. The building on the shores of the River Ness also houses a shop and a restaurant. The Board of Balnain House made the decision to call it a day after a Glasgow-based business consultant reported that the company's activities coupled with having to look after an A-listed building were unsustainable. The company will now be wound up by the end of December. Four years ago Balnain House encountered similar financial troubles and were taken over by the National Trust for Scotland with the help of grant aid from Historic Scotland. Ah.. Re: [scots-l] FW: Hi
Julie MacDonald asked: ...plan to visit family in Scotland. My brother...has asked me to try and buy for him the sheet music to 'William Wallace'...by J Scott SkinnerI shall be in Scotland from about 29th December through to the 2nd January and if the shops are anything like they are here nothing will be open... Shops will be open until Hogmanay (31st), so that's not your problem. I seem to remember seeing some of Skinner's single sheet publications in - possibly - Rae McIntosh (Edinburgh), but I've no idea whether "William Wallace" was among them. It is in The Scottish Violinist, which you can still buy, and The Caledonian Companion, which you should be able to get (I don't think I've seen it for a while, though). That's your best bet. Re: [scots-l] Balnain House
Nigel said: This is sad news for all. Fingers crossed for some sort of recovery. I haven't read about it in the press; was it the costs of keeping the building going? One of the reasons the Adult learning Project (ALP) in Edinburgh manages so well, I think, is the support given by Community Education, so they don't have the costs of keeping the fabric of a building in one piece (almost all our classes are in two schools at which other evening classes are being held). There is a dream to have a building to call our own, but that will inevitably brings its own peculiar problems with it. I don't think ALP could run a building on the basis of how things work now (ie very cheap) - they'd need to share something that was run along commercial lines, but maybe gave them privileged access to facilities.
