I have been asked:

 ...I am trying to find the words to the song.. On the Beach at
 Portobello

 I have heard it sung a few times, but the guy who used to sing it
 especially for me (as I live in Porty) has died...

Any ideas?

Young traditional musicians rise to the occasion!

BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2004

On Saturday 11th October twelve young traditional musicians from all
over Scotland (Shetland to the Borders) performed an amazing concert in
Biggar’s Corn Exchange. Each semi-finalist played a 10-minute set to a
near capacity audience and was judged by a panel drawn from professional
traditional musicians, festival organisers etc. 

The six finalists to come out of the semi-finals are Shona Donaldson -
Huntly (voice, fiddle), James Graham - Lochinver (Gaelic song), Sarah
Naylor - Skye (fiddle, voice), Rosie Morton - Edinburgh (clarsach), Tom
Orr - Lanark (accordion), and  Jenna Reid - Shetland (fiddle, piano,
voice). 

The six musicians will now go through to the finals which will be staged
at a prestigious concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Celtic
Connections festival on January 25th 2004. Each will perform for 15
minutes with their chosen accompanist. 

The winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician
Award will be provided with an opportunity to visit three Canadian
Festivals including Vancouver FF and Harrison Springs FF, a CD with Foot
Stompin’ Records, £1000 of in-house internet strategy, design and
development provided by Tangent Multimedia, One year’s membership of
Musicians Union. All finalists get a session on BBC Radio Scotland’s
Travelling Folk and get one year’s membership of TMSA.

The young musicians had spent the weekend in workshops on performance,
biography skills and improvising. There was also photo’s taken by Carla
Hillman which will be used in the Celtic Connections brochure.

This Award exists to encourage young musicians to keep their tradition
alive and to maximise their musical potential by the pursuit of a career
in traditional music.
