I know academia isn't for everyone but you may want to look at being a sysadmin
person at one of the universities. The money probably isn't so good but there
usually isn't as much chance of them going bust. If you are prepared to grit

One thing that amazes me is that same job on different jobsites has a
wildly different level of pay.
