The '➡️' (producable by `echo e29ea1efb88f | xxd -r -p`) seems to mess up
the width in screen with or without this patch. Can anyone corroborate whether
this is the same issue?

I meant to post the comment on issue #63634 (that was the patch I tested); of
course, this patch was already included in my version of screen.
