Re: [sdre-l]: voice change?

1999-10-23 Thread Paul Hack

Could just be the mix, but I prefer to think it's his vocal skills
developing. There's a lot more texture and subtlety to the vocals on LP2,
HowItFeels, and FrogQueen. That's not to say that Diary doesn't rock me like
a hurricane.

Subject: [sdre-l]: voice change?

My first sdre cd was Diary. When I got Lp2 I thought
what the heck? His voice is tottaly different, and I
still think it does. Now I know what is on Lp2,
hiftbso and his solo album is the real voice but why
does he sound different on diary, and if you dont
think he does then tell me... Any ways see yah...
 Keep on listening

Re: [sdre-l]: what would you recomend...

1999-10-23 Thread Tara Matthews

I would definately recommend diary first, because it was their first...In my
experience, the people that hear HIFTBSO first, seem to not end up liking
sdre as much they should be liked. you know? Hearing the albums in the
order in which they came out ... seems like a good idea because you can see
how they have matured throughout the years. Like reading a book of their
lives... (instead... listening to their lives). You do it in chronological
order You don't pick up a book and read it from the last past page to
the foreward. it wouldn't make sence. Same with their albums. It's a
story of their lives... what goes on, growing up and realizing new
things... don't you agree?
**

HIFTBSO was the first Sunny Day album I was exposed to and I consider Sunny
Day one of the greatest bands to ever touch my life. I am a fairly new Sunny
Day fan (obviously). If Dairy had been the first album from SDRE I had
heard, I don't think I would have been as impressed with them. I know this
may sound sacreligious to many of you, but I am drawn to HITFTBSO far more
than the other two albums. I love all three, but HITFTBSO has something more
that the others don't...something that really moves my soul and touches my
emotions.

I was so surprised when I joined this mailing list and read the comments
about HITFTBSO. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like many of you don't hold
it in very high regard, especially in comparison to Diary. Don't worry guys!
Admitting you like the later album as much or more than the earlier ones
doesn't make you any less a fan ;) I suppose many of you were drawn to SDRE
because of Diary and HITFTBSO just isn't the same. It is my humble opinion,
however, that HITFTBSO is SDRE's best album and I look forward to seeing (or
hearing :) how they grow in the future.

[sdre-l]: that voice

1999-10-23 Thread mother brain

Hello to all of you,
I think jeremy's voice is maturing nicely, but if I had to complain
about two things on the cd it would be that he doesn't scream like
on the studio albums--completely unerstable, I must say--and Joe Bass'
tone just isn't up to it on some songs, especially j'nuh. I really
love that meaty sound that Nate had on the album. Other than that,
it is all a first-rate, capital show. I cannot stop listening to
Days were Golden. I've never heard anything more touching than that
song performed live. I don't think it makes me feel sadness, it's
more along the lines of pity. But to be completely honest, I can
see why the band might have wanted to do something different with
the video, it's a bit lackluster in production, a good show, but I
think the band would have wanted to do something more artsy, a la Meeting
People is Easy. I'm really upset that Sub Pop didn't put
on the encore too. Oh well, I'm thankful for what I do have.
Let's see...My playlist:
SDRE--Live
Godspeed you black emperor!--slow riot for a new zero kanada e.p.
The Smiths--Louder than bombs
Jimmy Eat World--Static Prevails
Hum--Puppets
Bye.

[sdre-l]: [sdre-l] live

1999-10-23 Thread Neal Sidhwaney

i agree with the poster comment. i was like "THIS is the poster i get for
ordering early?" the only non-music SDRE memorabilia i have is the diary
t-shirt so i was really looking forward to it too. *sigh*

i think the sound on the live video is great but the video aspect of it
looks SO contrived. i realize this is much better quality than most
homegrown videos but they just don't seem very natural to me. i think the
music videos at the end are great though

i *DID* think they were wonderful live last year at Western Washington
University but maybe its just something you can't capture on film. who
knows.

1999-10-23 Thread james j frye

i left and moved and now i got my computer running so i get to keep
updated on all the sdre news..yeah! so first hello to all. and i have
heard some weird sdre stuff, but ill talk later it breaks my heart to see
that someone disagrees that the shows are mediocre??? that might be
because the whole crowd is DAZEd until the next song is over then we
breath. the first time i saw sdre everyones jaw was dropped no one was
talking and then at the end of the song everyone looks around nodding
their head in approval, knowing the the person your looking at has this
weird tingly feeling going throughout his/her body. then someone in the
back yells, "never quit, play forever," then everyone starts agreeing and
they play another song. when I see sdre i lose all sight of the world
around me my friends wont even talk to me, my gf even almost broke up
with me because she thought something was wrong because i didnt talk to
her through out the whole show. well this is long enough we can all get
carried away with sdre.

[sdre-l]: the live cd is out - preorderers, check your mail!

1999-10-23 Thread Rob Riss

hi,

just checked my mail and found the new live cd with the rest of my junk.
The packaging is kind of basic, just a digipak thing with a black and white
cover (that sketch on the subpop page). The inside has a picture of dan
singing on the left with the liner notes, and a blurry picture of jeremy
under the clear CD tray.

Hey, it sounds pretty good, but i hope it doesn't ruin the experience of
seeing them live. I also pre-ordered the video, but ordered it
seperately...i guess it just isn't ready yet.

The "extras" that subpop said would be included look to me like a promo
postcard for diary and one for how it feels. No poster was in there...

hope everyone enjoys it!
have a good week (i hate mondays),

Re: [sdre-l]: what would you recomend...

1999-10-23 Thread SuperDanSDRE

Actually, I heard Diary first, and I was completely blown away, so I would
definitely recommend that first... (especially since I'm a drummer and this
is my favorite to date as far as Will's stuff goes)... but second, I heard
HIFTBSO, because they didn't have lp2 at the store I went to at the time. I
was blown away by that one too, but to me, I've always thought that after
hearing the first, then third, then second in that order, it seems to me that
somehow, lp2 is a perfect mix/transition from Diary to HIFTBSO. The drums are
still pretty hectic, but as was mentioned, the vocals lean more towards
HIFTBSO... and there is less of Dan's singing it seems on lp2 than on Diary,
but more than on HIFTBSO It almost seems as though the band knew that
they were going to make their third album in a different way than their
first, but they helped lead the fans from one to the other with lp2. I guess
that's a weird opinion, but I have some friends who agree. Any thoughts?

Dan W.

On the live album, my favorite is track six, "Song About an Angel", but it's
always been my favorite anyway. It's an excellent song to sing along with or
drum along to. Kudos to William Goldsmith, my favorite drummer, and to
everyone else in the band, which I guess can include "Joe Bass" on the live
album/video too.

And if that guy didn't think that SDRE was good live, then he must have been
under some sort of an influence, and he probably hasn't seen the video yet...

[sdre-l]: frustration of all...

1999-10-23 Thread Michael K Earle

yeah, so i was at work, reading the list and all, so i decide to surf on
over to see the live video and... cripes! my sound card doesn't work!
i'm never using that station again!

to Jared: I'm pretty sure he always sang : "Shakespeare...sang
'Aramay'"(which i think is a song or poem from one of his works but
might actually be from later than master William's time so it could also
be me hearing stuff),"...so I say (sing)"(i think it switches out each
verse...[even thoough i feel like a thick spectacled stickler typing all
this out {as if any of these subparenthetical statements were anything
but a poor attempt to write like rev. n0rb and also to see how far i can
go}] but then again, it's like it says on the webpage: "lyrics
translated by:") there. is that right? probably not.
BUT rainer maria- what can you say? flailing, erudite, literate,
sincere, melodic, driving, captivating...
the first time i ever HEARD them we played with them and the Hal al
Shedad in Charlotte NC and they were a)super nice. b)super involved and
talking to everyone. c)rocking beyond all belief. and. d)quite impressed
that i'd read "i have a rendezvous with death before" i was ten. (long
story, but gramma wathced the soaps, i read whatever books were around
the house) pow.
everywhere i turn these days people are asking me about SDRE. and i tell
'em every blasted thing. play them something, then tell them the song's
about Jesus- whoa. i love flipping lids. but the way everything seems to
be blowing up, timebomb won't know what hit 'em. no pun intended. nah,
that'd a lie.

Michael K Earle
nofah keen tsidg.
yet.

Re: [sdre-l]: uh, hi?

1999-10-23 Thread Paul Hack

Hey there. As far as the Engik/Christianity stuff you should go check out
sunnydayrealestate.com and read the band history stuff and its links. I've
attached a good file of FAQs to start you out. As far as other bands with
the same emotional intensity and style (i guess emo ia as good a word as
any), I'd heartily recommend Mineral, Christie Front Drive, Promise
Ring(earlier stuff), Cap'n Jazz, Get Up Kids (earlier stuff), At The Drive
In, Fugazi, and Rainer Maria for a start. These are all bands other Sunny
Day fans I've known have liked almost immediately when they first heard them
(this includes me, of course). Well, good luck, and enjoy.

i'm thea. to tell you all the truth i have no clue how i ended up on this
 list, but hey, that's cool...
i'm feeling like i have to confess all this stuff, like that i don't
really
no all that much about sdre except that i love them. i've never been much
of a fan of anything so it's pretty wierd to be involved in this type of
 thing. obviously i'm having issues...
okay, so i can't even figure out exactly what emo is or if sunny day real
estate truly fits into that genre. what i would really love is if you
people out there would tell me about some bands that may have the same
sort
of sound, the same rawness, passion, y'know. that would be great.
also, what is this about jeremy being hardcore born again christian? for
some reason that freaks me out. it's totally none of my business, but if
someone doesn't mind i would like to know more of the story.
 thanx a bunch
 you all are peaches
 always thea
