[sdre-l]: a rising tide review
dear list, after being swept away by the ocean and sensing focus and harmony in the song one, i eagerly anticipated with an open mind the brand-new sunny day real estate. like many who have posted before, i chose not to listen to the album until the release date; call me a dork, but i believe there is something about the moment that you lay your hands/eyes on something you have never encountered before but know that it is special(for me that would be the new CD). if i would have to make a comparison of the feeling i had when i purchased and listened for the first time to the CD, it would be of a child having something that they are not able to comprehend, but yet understood somehow that it was special. my first listen to the album left me in a state of aporia. after the last track played, i had an overwhelming urge to listen to the CD again, but this time with headphones because i knew there were many nuances i had missed while listening to it on speakers. after several listens to the album and regaining my bearings, my initial feelings have matured to sensations of awe and bewilderment of the complexities of each song. yet at the same time when i forget to remember about my interest and passion in the music, i feel a sense of unity pouring out into my ears. and its strange because i don't think i have ever gotten that kind of feeling listening to a sunny day album before, but then again it must be written that each album has its own feel. there is a part of me that wants to disect and analyze the songs in this album like i have done in the past with other sunny day songs (e.g. production, musicianship, theory, etc.), but there is something holding me back from doing so this time. perhaps it is the thought that when a thing is broken down, a part of that thing is lost in the breaking process (in some sense i guess what is lost is the unity of the thing). not trying to sound too much like a buddhist, but if i had to describ! ! ! ! e the music on the new album i would have to write that the lyrics and the playing of the instruments that produce the sounds create the potential for the unifying effect, but what completes the effect is the one listening to it all. and i guess with this unity brings clarity and peace. i would like to write so much more about the feeling of the album, but then i think what more would i write? does anyone see what i am getting at? or am i just being a looney? i am curious as to what other think/feel about the album. peace, -peter Get your free email from AltaVista at http://altavista.iname.com

[sdre-l]: various
hey listers, just a few things to mention, respond to, etc went to the show last night in seattle, and i thought they did a pretty solid job. i could tell they were a bit rusty at times, as they just didn't seem quite as "on" as i'd seen them in the past. the touring bass player...someone said they didn't do justice to the old lines. sounded to me pretty much like he played exactly what was on the records. which is good and bad i think. but whatever. "in circles" just didn't sound right in standard tuning. especially the bass part on the beginning and between parts. they had like 15 guitars sitting next to the stage. maybe they just forgot to switch or something, but they should definitely do that from now on. as for will's drumming on "8", i gotta respectfully disagree with the person who said will went even crazier than he did on the album. i was standing there basically waiting for him to do fills, watching him, expecting the cool rolls he does during the choruses and the "sweet clover" parts, but he never did them. probably my biggest reason for liking that song is the way the drums and bass go together on parts like that, and that was just totally missing for me at the show. i still dug hearing the song live for the first time, but it was just missing something ya know? oh yeah, and whoever was doing soundchecks for them.for crying out loud, sound check dan's microphone before the show! i couldn't hear a word he sang. mind you he only sang on two of the songs, but still! "in circles" and "8" suffered greatly because of not being able to hear his vocals, in my opinion anyways. anyways, that's about it for me. my head is dizzy right now for no apparent reason so i should go lie down. take care everyone. john p.s.- for the guy who asked, TSMAP stands for "thief steal me a peach", an early SDRE 7" record. p.p.s.- my roommate wrote an article about the show for the Western Front (western washington's newspaper), so anyone who lives up here in b'ham check that out. and if anyone wants to see a copy let me know and i can send it either personally or to the list, whatever. =) Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
[sdre-l]: portland in-store
list, so last night i went to the in-store at music millenium in portland. setlist: one every shining time you arrive the ocean 8 faces in disguise guitar and video games it was really short, but it was only an in-store. jeremy was much, much more animated and talkative than i had ever seen him before. he talked more than dan. he had some trouble with his acoustic guitar before and during the ocean, so he made it into a big joke. after faces in disguise they tried to leave and said they didn't have anything more to play. people were yelling for guitar and video games, so they played that. all in all, it was pretty weak. i know that in-stores don't always the same intensity as real shows, but great bands can make in-store performances great. and this was not great. they hardly moved the whole time. the keyboardist/thrid guitarist/backup singer is useless. i like the music a lot more without the keyboards, and he looked very bored the whole time. and his voice sucked. i miss joe. one other thing i thought was interesting is the way the band is set up now. dan is on the far side, will is next to him, jeremy is next to him, and the other two guys are off in the corner. while i was watching, i was thinking that this is probably no accident. it's the three "real" members of the band saying, "this is the band here in the center, look over and see the other guys if you want." so that's it. it was cool to see them play 8. i'm glad i went just to see them. see ya. chris Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
[sdre-l]: Re: snibe, artwork, other stuff (seven)
the sound clip before tearing in my heart is will's sister from years ago... she walked around france with a tape recorder and recorded kids playing, and that's her talking... sdre signed a two-album deal on time bomb... anyway, since i mentioned seven in my last show review i've gotten a few e-mails from people that mentioned they saw them play seven at a show... yes, they did open with seven at one of the shows on the hiftbso tour (can't remember which) and they did play it at bumbershoot 98 (i was there!). but it was very obvious they were doing it just to please the fans (or in the case of bumbershoot, make the people that didn't know them very well go "oh yeah, this is the band that does that song" since it got a lot of airplay on KNDD in seattle back in the day). when they played it, jeremy was not into it at all... it looked like he couldn't wait for it to be over. they've mentioned a few times they're tired of it, and i certainly don't care... there are so many other better songs of theirs. especially if they don't want to play it that much. but, like i said, everyone was yelling for seven every time i saw them on the hiftbso tour... and i didn't hear anyone yelling for it last night... which i thought was nice.
[sdre-l]: Sdre.com store --- who the hell can afford this?
Jesus, 20 bucks for the new t-shirt shirt? 50 bucks for the workshirt? This is crazy. Way out of line. I'm sure shipping nabs you in the ass too. If the merch booth at the show is this expensive, my hopes for sdre are shot. I guess i'll find out tomorrow night... keeping my fingers crossed, -rob Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
[sdre-l]: another rising tide post
hey list, bla bla bla, "rising tide" absolutely freakin' rules, bla bla bla, i'm sure you all know this already. anyway, i love track 4, "disappear," it's one of my faves, but did anyone notice how the bridge is the same chords as the chorus of "learn to fly," by foo fighters? hmmm... if this was intentional, it would be a very funny tongue-in-cheek nate-bashing. but i don't think it is. :) anyway. after listening to "tide" straight through about 5 times so far, i tried to go back and listen to "diary"... um... it was difficult. i have to say, i love those songs, they are classics, but now that i've heard this new mature sunny day -- with great production to boot... well... i have to say their creativity and songwriting skills have increased greatly since '93. the last two tracks on diary are the only ones that i feel really fit with the new sound... speaking of which, why not play grendel on the tour? yeah, it'd be hard but they could pull it off, especially with their alleged 3 backup musicians. and it fits so well with, "tearing in my heart," for example. just my opinion. anyway, i'm done. thanks to these guys for making such great music to stand the test of time. -luke- YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Re: [sdre-l]: sdre.com is up...
I was just there. I got my TRT CD last night, and it has www.sunnydayrealestate.com on the back. It leads me to believe that artistdirtect didn't have the site ready yet, and this site went up so timebomb wouldn't sue them. All they did was a topnav, a leftnav, the front images and images for apparel and cd's. I wouldn't be surprised if they stole the cd images from John and Reb's site (nexusx.com/sdre). Big sites like this generate their html on the fly, or have templates for production teams to plug content into. This is in no way several months worth of work. SDRE and timebomb got robbed. Maybe we should start a web petition to either bring back Brian's site, or make "in the blue" the official site. AD DOES have a working merch site, the new official site can just link to it. ITB (abbrev in the blue) has a great bulletin board setup (better than ad's) and is sdre-l friendly. I'm willing to conspire with all the big webbheads as to how we can outshine AD's page and win SDRE/timebomb over. Dan T. On Thu, 22 Jun 2000, L.D. Ferris wrote: ...as I'm sure most of you know. All I have to say is this - is it possible, Brian, that you could get a job at Artist Direct and show them how to make a half-decent web page? I mean, honestly, it's about as uncomplex as you can get! Really, it's as if they heard us bitchign over here these past two days, said "Whoops, forgot about that web page for that band!" and put it together in a dy and a half. These guys are experts? It's content isn't even consistent. It has tour dates missing from it's webpage that were in the email that were sent out (July 6 or 8th or something), but what is worse is that both the email AND the web page are missing at least one date - the July 4th one in Toronto, which I just got my tickets for today, so they sure as hell better be playing... The links from the email they sent otu don't even work, and I see nothing about a bag on the website that they mention in the email. Admittedly, this coudl be my own server's fault, it wouldn't be the first time I'd gotten email links that don't work... The link section links the the ubl page for SDRE. Now that's just fucking lazy. The chat room isn't even up - maybe they will link it to instructions on how to join the pre-existing efnet one, just like they link to the pre-existing ubl for thier link page.. The BBS is up and running, but I prefer the mailing list. I'm totally impartial in that. :) Speaking of which - where the hell is the link to the mailing list? All in all, it's become quite obvious why they took down Brian/Ansigod's page so early on - they wanted us to forget what a good page looked like so that we might process this shit more easily. Everyone who sees the guys at the shows should ask "What happened to your good web page, and why did you get a shitty one put up instead?" Also, the logo on the homepage isn't loading, and they have the wrong page titles on some of the pages as well. I notice there isn't a feedback link anywhere in sight...probably the only smart thing they did with the page. Bring back Brian! * "The coast is clear!
