I've tried in v1.3.0 and v1.4.0, both complain the same way.
Attached is:
(1) VerifySignature.java taken from
xml-security-bin-1.3.0 zip, in directory
src_samples/org/apache/xml/security/samples/signature
I added ability to specify signature file to verify on the
