OK, So I need to revise my problem, and apologies for posting in a thread.

So the problem is this. Kmail version of maildir is not directly compatible 
with courier. The problem origionally was my not understanding that a proper 
mail dir must contain the 'cur', 'new', and 'tmp' directories. Kmail does 
this. 

The problem comes with how subdirectories are presented. To work with IMAP a 
subdirectory should be named starting with a period. Kmail uses a pretty 
confusing mix of hiddn and normal directories so that a directory can hold 
both subfolders and messages, even if mbox is being used.

Just wanted to throw out the above for future edification, sorry if it is 
obvious stuff. So I think I am going to write a script to create a seperate 
maildir with symlinks to the real folders. Does this sound like the right way 
to solve the problem?
