Would it be possible to setup an internet service that uses GPRS/EDGE

At least the latency wouldn't suck as much as for 3G. Not
that it would matter too much, with the downlink of 0.1 Gm.

 for uplink and
a one-way VSAT for downlink ? Here GPRS charges apply only for
 downloads and upload
 requests are essentially free...

Yes, but you'll need a server at the other end of the GPRS/VSAT links
to split and merge your traffic, and some serious packet routing and
tunnelling foo (the VSAT broadcast will mangle packet headers, so
they'll need to be tunneled through).

This would be a good time to finalise ride-sharing arrangements. I
can offer a ride for up to 3 people who are willing to hop on at my
apartment in JP Nagar. Send me private mail for phone number etc.

So, who else wants a ride? I think I have one place left in my car at
   this point.

I have two seats in mine -- Gabin is my only confirmed passenger at this
  point.

I would need a ride too. I can come down to MG Road or any other
 specified location.

How about the gate of Fireflies? ;-)

But seriously, Koramangala, BTM Layout or JP Nagar are on my route --
any of those would work for me.

Hmmm, so you and Ramki planning to arm wrestle for the last seat?

I'll be able to make it on the first day. Which means there is
another car leaving from Jayanagar (close to Udhay's place). Can
offer a ride to 3 people from that part of town.

In fact, I would insist on getting someone to ride with me. I have a
terrible sense of direction and it's no fun being lost alone.

Venky, the Second.

Just talked to Udhay. The plan is for people who need transportation
and are close to that part of town to meet at Udhay's place. Will
pick up people from there.

Venky.

By other end you mean at the end of the VSAT provider ?

I was hoping a combination of NAT and netfilter ... changing outgoing
packet headers
for the source address might have worked

I had a strange phone-call with the VSAT provider just now... I called
them to find out
if they had done such a setup for anyone. At first, the guy told me it
was illegal because
you have to uplink through the government provider, then I told him my
desired uplink was
through GPRS provided by a government telecom operator. Fine, he said,
then it would
be legal.
