Serbia will seek a non-binding opinion from the International Court of
Justice that Kosovo's declaration of independence in February was illegal,
Vuk Jeremic, Serbia's foreign minister, said yesterday.

Mr Jeremic said he was cautiously optimistic about gaining support for the
case to be heard at the United Nations-accredited court, even though the US
and most EU members had recognised the new state.

Mr Jeremic urged the UN to consider a functional partition, allowing
Kosovo's ethnic Serb minority to avoid dealing with the ethnic
Albanian-dominated state.
