Thanks for the help Mark.
I compiled up the latest code as suggested and removed the ROM line. I
wouldn't have thought of doing that myself - I assumed it was needed.
It's now booting through the dead sergeant prompt.
Now I just need to get the networking sorted out!
BTW I am running this
