Hello, I'm running OpenVMS 7.3 on a SimH/VAX. The PC keyboard is suboptimal
(annoying), as several keys are missing and the NumLock light goes on and
off when I press the key in the PF1 position.
So, I wanted to ask if anyone has gotten a particular DEC, Compaq, HP, or
Cherry keyboard to work
Has anyone tried a USB keypad like this one?

It has the requisite physical keys, anyway, so theoretically it's just a
matter of xev and xmodmap, right?

I'm running SimH/VAX on an Ubuntu 9.10 box. The Ubuntu box has two
NICs in it: an the onboard Gigabit NIC and a PCI 100 Mbit NIC. The VAX
is set up to use the 100 Mbit NIC. I have everything working but I
thought I'd run it by you guys and ask if there's a better or more
kosher way to do this.
Having set up my SimH/VAX according to Phil Wherry's HOW-TO (extremely
useful by the way - I've referred to it scores of times), I now have a
system disk that is only approximately 1.5 Gb in size. Now, I realize
that I might be able to get by with this amount of disk space, but I'm
curious whether
Hello Tim and everyone else:
Thanks - after a few white-knuckled moments and with the your help and
that of some very kind folks over at comp.os.vms I managed to made a
backup of my system disk to a larger image/container. However, VMS
doesn't seem to recognize that the disk is now larger.

I just got my hands on a real text terminal (the kind with the amber
CRT display). It's a CADO Systems C332 (emulates various VT models).
I connected the terminal to my Linux box's serial port and started a
Linux serial console on it. I have the terminal working flawlessly with
Linux. (I can

and terminal.

OK, based on Jason's suggestion, here's what I did and what I got:
(1) installed bsdgames on the Linux box.
(2) set the Linux serial console and the terminal to 9600 baud.
(3) $ rain
(4) Watch the drops. It works fine. Nice.
(5) $ telnet livvax
(6) Log in to the VAX
(7) Everything works now!
May I ask why are you using the DZ emulation? Maybe there's a
different way to skin the cat, as it were.
When I tried the DZ thing, I was trying to connect to the SimH from a
VT terminal. My first attempt was via telnet - just connected the
terminal to a Linux box and telnet to the SimH. This
The problem comes when I want to
connect to the virtual VAX from the host Linux system. That cannot be
accomplished by a normal LAN connection because they can't see each

Ah, I see. Can't help you there: I just added a second physical NIC

Going out on a limb here, my intuition is telling me that if you
remove the attach xq0 ethX line in your vax.ini file, the Simh will
start normally.
Are you running Simh as root? On my system, at least, I have to run it
as root. According to Wherry this is due to the Simh ethernet code
Hi Lennert, if you don't get immediately effective help here, you
might try reposting your question on the VMS newsgroup - comp.os.vms -
disk shadowing comes up there frequently.

I appear to be having a bit of a problem with SimH VAX 3.8-2 rc2 and disk
image access. I am using an old PIII 933MHz duel CPU workstation with 1GB RAM
and XP SP2. . . . Any ideas?
Here's what I'd do: wipe the disk, install favorite Linux
distribution, and recompile SimH using gcc.
Im just talking about the system console. Im simulating an HP2100 system
using simh and for this the system console is on the simh console.
Consequently, if I attach to the host computer using serial and then run up
the HP2100 system, the system console is on the serial port.
OK, yes, VMS

SimH's user serial ports
This looks great in theory, but breaks down (a little) in practice.
One example: back in the day, I was used to TYPE-ing a long file and
using CTRL-S and CTRL-Q to stop and start the listing.
As a side note, I personally was never quite able to understand the

I don't know why someone hasn't setup a vintage computing (or maybe
just DEC) wiki to assemble all the info into one place like I did for
the terminals wiki (see signature below).
If someone decides to undertake such a project, here's a possible
starting point. It was posted here a couple days
That's all I got. I'll gladly test/verify any other details if required.
Hi Mark -
You mentioned your SimH is hand-compiled, but didn't specify which version?

P.S. I'll bet your SimH/VAX on Raspberry Pi just kicks the pants off my
SimH/VAX on WRAP!
But I guess I have to find another list for detailed help. Is there an
X-windows/Linux discussion group? Any other possibilities?
Hi David:
try comp.os.vms
