connection refused is the result of a client trying to connect to
a port on which nobody is listening.
I don't have bind9 installed on my system so I can't check this
directly, but the docs I found via google
(http://www.nominum.com/content/documents/bind9arm.pdf)
suggest that you have to have an rndc.conf file to tell both named and

[SLUG] Font Size specification

2004-08-28 Thread Rod Butcher
I have experimented with running various apps such as Thunderbird,
Firefox and Sweep under KDE and Gnome. The toolbar font sizes of all
three are tiny under KDE and I can't find any way of enlarging them
(Thunderbird and Firefox have fontsize change options but this does not
affect the toolbar font size). Under Gnome, the toolbar fontsizes of
Thunderbird and Firefox respond to the Gnome fontsize settings, but not
Sweep, which offers no font size control.
So.. is there a standard way of changing apps font sizes in Linux;
failing that, can I get access to the Gnome settings while KDE is
running, and if so can they be made to operate while KDE is managing the
desktop ? If I run a mix of KDE, Gnome and Other apps how can I get some
 fontsize consistency ?
thanks

[SLUG] Mozilla / linux solution for StGeorge ibank madness

I don't know if this has been discussed recently - I didn't see it in

For some reason I have to change my user agent twice! to log onto
StGeorge Bank. Is there a single user agent string that will work?

One way to do it is:

1. Install User Agent Switcher
http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/useragentswitcher/
Will give menu items under Tools-User Agent Switcher

2. Specify SGB1 as IE/6.0 [en] (Windows NT 5.1; U)
and SGB2 as Mozilla/5.0 [en] (Windows NT 5.1; U)

3. Change user agent to SGB1 and press login button for ibank.

4. After login screen has loaded, switch to SGB2.

5. Login.

Does anyone have a better method?

Thanks,
Mark.

Re: [SLUG] More on Font sizes under KDE Gnome

Hi,

I have a very similar situation.
I'm running KDE and evolution on RedHat 9.0.
The only way I've found to control the 'look and feel' of evolution,
which is after all a 'ximian' product (like gnome), is to run
'gnome-control-panel' from a terminal window. Then to open 'themes'. The
chosen theme is *remembered* by 'gnome-control-panel', so each time you
reboot you need to go through the (gnome-control-panel etc.) routine
again.
I customised the theme by choosing a them that I liked then going to the
file that holds the info in text format. That is a 'gtkrc' file. For
example for the 'Bluecurve' theme I'd edit the
'/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc' file.
It's a matter of trying out which group of parameters in the gtkrc file
determines what in your resulting screen (colours, text size, font etc.)
So I got what I wanted finally, beit somewhat indirectly :-)

I've posted to several groups about this problem but there is not a lot
of light :-(

The good news is that it's all configurable if you want to spend the

Have tried many, many window managers, always come back to KDE, but
happen to think evolution is the best email client.

gconfd - which, I'm hazarding a guess is launched as a by product of
running GNOME-panel but being a daemon, is not killed when GNOME-panel
is. You can check this by grep-ing for gconfd in ps before and after
running the GNOME panel.

My 2c, your core applications (as listed in the earlier email) all
appear to be GNOME applications or GNOME compliant, have you considered
using GNOME? Another possibility, although I know almost nothing of KDE,
is that KDE may use a session manager and you could convince it to
launch gconfd for you every time you login. This may even be what some
non-Debian distros do to fake integration of GNOME and KDE apps.

Hope that helps.

[SLUG] Kernel panic: DMA pool Exhausted in RHAS 2.1

2004-08-28 Thread Pushkar Bhatkoti
Dear All,
Just faced this problem with the RHAS-2.1. I seen this message kernel panic: dma pool
exhausted and server gets hangup. I tried to google and all but didn't find proper
solution.

Finally I gone to kernel level debugging. I installed teh debugging kernel from
kernel.org. And observed the log after boot and b4 boot and when rhas-21 gets hanged.

Can't believed it was the problem with my hardware based raid. I was using U-320, 320
u adaptec make dual channel SCSI PCI card. actually the driver supplied with this
server (server is Wipro make , only in India) but server is intel based motherboard
was for RH7.3.

I finally downloaed the rpm named aic7xxx-6.2 and patched it to kernel.
It worked fine. and since than it is working fine. otherwise system gets hangup
everytime when it starts to insert or eject the modules in the kernel.

So finally, if u face this sort of the problem please try to make the dd disk for 320
card using dd if=/dev/fd0 of (image name). image can be download from apaptec.com
site. and than start fresh installation. If u will do like me. I installed the system
rhas-2.1 with rh7.3 driver and than I upgraded using the rpm provided by adaptec.

Additionally the symptrom for this hardware realated problem is when u tried to
installed any rpm using rpm -ivh or rpm -uvh u will get the same error log i.e. kernel
panic: dma pool exhausted and u need to power down adn up it through switch...

greattt. just don't be fool its very simple to get resolve it...

Sweep is still a GTK+ 1.x app, which means you have to deal with horrible
problems from the bad old days of X core fonts. ;-) If you have a program
called gtkswitch handy, you can quickly set your GTK+ 1.x fonts. Otherwise,
you can edit the GTK+ 1.x gtkrc file manually, for example:

  ~/.gtkrc
  style user-font
  {
font=-microsoft-trebuchet ms-medium-r-normal-*-*-90-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1
  }
  widget_class * style user-font

GNOME stores configuration information in a backend system called GConf, and
propagates some of those settings (including fonts) through a cross-desktop
standard called 'XSETTINGS'. GNOME applications are immediately notified
about configuration changes because they use GConf. Some non-GNOME apps will
watch XSETTINGS to pick up changes.

So, because KDE doesn't set XSETTINGS, Thunderbird and Firefox try to use
sensible defaults. But when you run one of the 'core' GNOME components such
as the Panel or preference dialogues, two daemons kick in: gconfd (which
manages configuration change notification) and gnome-settings-daemon (which
synchronises XSETTINGS and a bunch of other stuff).

I suspect the best solution to all of this would be for KDE to correctly
support XSETTINGS. But in the mean time, if you add 'gnome-settings-daemon'
to your KDE session, you'll be sorted.

what I do is run gnome-font-properties define the font sizes then I have a script in /etc/profile.d that runs gnome-settings-daemon

This pretty much fixes the font problem when running GTK apps in KDE.

Of course, it is very important to be sober when you take an exam.
Many worthwhile careers in the street-cleansing, fruit-picking and
subway-guitar-playing industries have been founded on a lack of
understanding of this simple fact.

Re: [SLUG] More on Font sizes under KDE Gnome

2004-08-28 Thread Rod Butcher
Thanks a million Jeff, gtk-theme-switch is the answer to all my problems
- I can now control the appearance of all my Gtk apps (including the
amazing Sweep !)..
thanks

This still leaves me with other apps like Sweep, which display tiny fonts
under any screen manager. Are such apps controllable ?

Sweep is still a GTK+ 1.x app, which means you have to deal with horrible
problems from the bad old days of X core fonts. ;-) If you have a program
called gtkswitch handy, you can quickly set your GTK+ 1.x fonts. Otherwise,
you can edit the GTK+ 1.x gtkrc file manually, for example:
  ~/.gtkrc
  style user-font
  {
font=-microsoft-trebuchet ms-medium-r-normal-*-*-90-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1
  }
  widget_class * style user-font
