[SLUG] Font Size specification
I have experimented with running various apps such as Thunderbird, Firefox and Sweep under KDE and Gnome. The toolbar font sizes of all three are tiny under KDE and I can't find any way of enlarging them (Thunderbird and Firefox have fontsize change options but this does not affect the toolbar font size). Under Gnome, the toolbar fontsizes of Thunderbird and Firefox respond to the Gnome fontsize settings, but not Sweep, which offers no font size control. So.. is there a standard way of changing apps font sizes in Linux; failing that, can I get access to the Gnome settings while KDE is running, and if so can they be made to operate while KDE is managing the desktop ? If I run a mix of KDE, Gnome and Other apps how can I get some fontsize consistency ? thanks rod -- --- Brought to you by a thunderbird, penguin, gnu and a camel -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

Re: [SLUG] More on Font sizes under KDE Gnome
Hi, I have a very similar situation. I'm running KDE and evolution on RedHat 9.0. The only way I've found to control the 'look and feel' of evolution, which is after all a 'ximian' product (like gnome), is to run 'gnome-control-panel' from a terminal window. Then to open 'themes'. The chosen theme is *remembered* by 'gnome-control-panel', so each time you reboot you need to go through the (gnome-control-panel etc.) routine again. I customised the theme by choosing a them that I liked then going to the file that holds the info in text format. That is a 'gtkrc' file. For example for the 'Bluecurve' theme I'd edit the '/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc' file. It's a matter of trying out which group of parameters in the gtkrc file determines what in your resulting screen (colours, text size, font etc.) So I got what I wanted finally, beit somewhat indirectly :-) I've posted to several groups about this problem but there is not a lot of light :-( The good news is that it's all configurable if you want to spend the time, Long live open source and Linux. Have tried many, many window managers, always come back to KDE, but happen to think evolution is the best email client. kr, Luke On Sat, 2004-08-28 at 19:33, Rod Butcher wrote: Following up on my previous email, I've managed to control thee font sizes of Gnome-responsive apps, while using KDE, by loading the Gnome Panel (hence having both Gnome and KDE panel running), then killing Gnome panel. My 2c, your core applications (as listed in the earlier email) all appear to be GNOME applications or GNOME compliant, have you considered using GNOME? Another possibility, although I know almost nothing of KDE, is that KDE may use a session manager and you could convince it to launch gconfd for you every time you login. [SLUG] Kernel panic: DMA pool Exhausted in RHAS 2.1
Dear All, Just faced this problem with the RHAS-2.1. I seen this message kernel panic: dma pool exhausted and server gets hangup. I tried to google and all but didn't find proper solution. Finally I gone to kernel level debugging. I installed teh debugging kernel from kernel.org. And observed the log after boot and b4 boot and when rhas-21 gets hanged. Can't believed it was the problem with my hardware based raid. I was using U-320, 320 u adaptec make dual channel SCSI PCI card. actually the driver supplied with this server (server is Wipro make , only in India) but server is intel based motherboard was for RH7.3. I finally downloaed the rpm named aic7xxx-6.2 and patched it to kernel. It worked fine. and since than it is working fine. otherwise system gets hangup everytime when it starts to insert or eject the modules in the kernel. So finally, if u face this sort of the problem please try to make the dd disk for 320 card using dd if=/dev/fd0 of (image name). image can be download from apaptec.com site. and than start fresh installation. If u will do like me. I installed the system rhas-2.1 with rh7.3 driver and than I upgraded using the rpm provided by adaptec. Additionally the symptrom for this hardware realated problem is when u tried to installed any rpm using rpm -ivh or rpm -uvh u will get the same error log i.e. kernel panic: dma pool exhausted and u need to power down adn up it through switch... greattt. just don't be fool its very simple to get resolve it... GNOME stores configuration information in a backend system called GConf, and propagates some of those settings (including fonts) through a cross-desktop standard called 'XSETTINGS'. GNOME applications are immediately notified about configuration changes because they use GConf. Some non-GNOME apps will watch XSETTINGS to pick up changes. So, because KDE doesn't set XSETTINGS, Thunderbird and Firefox try to use sensible defaults. But when you run one of the 'core' GNOME components such as the Panel or preference dialogues, two daemons kick in: gconfd (which manages configuration change notification) and gnome-settings-daemon (which synchronises XSETTINGS and a bunch of other stuff). I suspect the best solution to all of this would be for KDE to correctly support XSETTINGS.
