Hi, SmartOS supports both M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe drives. I am using a NUC Kit (NUC6CAYH) and a Giga Z97 system with a M.2 SATA and a M.2 PCIe drive respectively. They both work well. Although I am using the latest SmartOS image, I don't think it necessary. Cheers.
