Are you using those vms just in console mode or any graphical mode?

Is the laptop dedicated to smartos as last purpose before death?
In that case open it and try to put a physical switch in the power line, if you
have that kind of skills.
Best case: you can turn off the display at will
Worst case: you solder back the wires and it's back to the original state.
I understand, thank you for your quick response. I wish I had the skills or
the $$ to support the project. Someday in the future for sure.
