not sure, if i understand you correctly.
but yesterday i broke my X on my _local_ computer by upgrading debian/sid.
beside others i noticed (after X was starting again) that the mouse
pointer was always drawn to the center of the screen, ie when moving the
mouse it jumped back like a rubber

Well, I tried downgrading hal to 0.5.11, which was the only
previous version (to 0.5.14) I could find in aptitude, but this didn't
work, and in the process, I pretty much lost the ability to boot into
zhone. A debian login prompt on the screen with no windows.
