My problem now is no GSM - which was also the case after my previous
install - with the symptoms being that
- Zhone briefly says Usage: Requested resource GSM with error (or a
permutation of those words)
- Zhone's phone, messages and contacts buttons stay greyed out.

Aha! It is empty.
There was a recent report where
this was the problem, and forcing reinstall of fso-config-gta02 fixed it. It's
not clear at the moment how it became empty, so worth a look.

I did not notice 'usage' string in error message in your original post.
I'm not sure what you mean here. I think I noted in my original post
that fso-usaged was not installed, and wondered whether that was a
problem.
