Sketchup is very good. Also, my daughter is doing Architectural Technology at
Uni and was introduced to it in the first year of her course as a very good
lead-in before going onto AutoCad.

AutoCAD is truly dreadful. It's so bad (for designing) that I went to visit
AutoDESK to ask them what it was for, since it was useless for design.
They said it was for making legal documents. Industry standard (what a truly
dreadful concept) it is an enormous impediment to designing.
Honest,
Sketchup is free and quite good for plans. I actually built a scale model of my
flat in Sketchup, spent longer measuring than drawing!

Search for MagicPlan on the iOS App Store. It enables you to create floor plans
automatically using the camera on iOS device. Takes the measurements and angles
thanks to the gyro on the iPhone. And best of all, it's free.
Highly recommend this one.

I've been using an app called floorplans. Not cheap, but seems good and quite

Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap/free software for doing floor

I'm with Sam. For the money, i.e none, Sketchup is extraordinary.

I've also used Sketchup for building 3d models from floor plans.
Re measuring I'd recommend a laser measure rather than tape... Though MagicPlan
does look pretty good.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I tried Magic plan and Sketchup. Magic
plan is really impressive though I had problems with hidden corners (those
who've used it will understand) and I need to practice some more.
Sketchup is really easy to use and, as Sam said creating the plans was much
