Results of my testing on a MacBook Pro:

Attempt 1:
Boot helper CD (soas-3-boot-test) in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-i686-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
EFI boot menu comes up, double-click CD icon
Automatic boot
Boots USB stick successfully

Attempt 2:
No CD in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-x86_64-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
EFI boot menu comes up, shows USB drive (!), double-click USB stick
labeled "EFI boot"
Automatic boot
Stuck at screen "Booting Fedora-13-x86_64-Live-SoaS in 0 seconds..."

Attempt 3:
No CD in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-x86_64-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
EFI boot menu comes up, shows USB drive, double-click USB stick
labeled "EFI boot"
Tab to enter GRUB boot menu
Press "a" to enter command line mode
Change disk label from "Fedora-13-x86_86-Live-SoaS" to "FEDORA"
Text disappears, stuck at blue boot screen

Attempt 4:
No CD in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-i686-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
EFI boot menu comes up, shows USB drive, double-click USB stick
labeled "EFI boot"
Automatic boot
Fedora starts to boot with a garbled screen
Eventually gets stuck on a black screen with a flashing cursor, but I
was not able to read the error message because the text was garbled

Attempt 5:
No CD in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-i686-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
Boot menu comes up, shows USB drive, double-click USB stick labeled "EFI boot"
Tab to enter GRUB boot menu
Press "a" to enter command line mode
Change disk label from "Fedora-13-i686-Live-SoaS" to "FEDORA"
Fedora starts to boot with a garbled screen
Eventually gets stuck on a black screen with a flashing cursor, but I
was not able to read the error message because the text was garbled

Attempt 6:
No CD in drive
USB stick partitioned MBR, formatted FAT, labeled FEDORA, loaded with
Fedora-13-i686-Live-SoaS, plugged in
"option" key held down at power-on
Boot menu comes up, shows USB drive, double-click USB stick labeled "EFI boot"
Tab to enter GRUB boot menu
Press "a" to enter command line mode
Change "quiet" to "nomodeset xdriver=vesa"
Fedora starts to boot with a better but still garbled screen
Eventually gets stuck on a black screen with a flashing cursor, but I
was not able to read the error message because the text was garbled

Summary:
- MacBook Pro will boot a USB stick created with the standard 32-bit
Windows/Linux instructions, with a helper CD
- MBR-partitioned USB sticks can probably be made to boot the MacBook
Pro without a helper CD, but I couldn't get it to work
- Without a helper CD, the 32-bit stick definitely got further along
than a 64-bit one

Yes, you attach the .iso file as a virtual CD drive to the virtual
machine and boot it up. From the Terminal Activity run liveinst and
install Sugar directly to the HD of the VM reboot and you have a
persistent install of sugar. You can then get updates and fixes to the
release of Sugar throughout the life cycle.

A MBR-partitioned USB stick will boot on an Intel Mac with an EFI
firmware? The Wiki made it sound like that was not possible. I guess I
should try it.

That is what the Mac boot CD is supposed to do.
Enable the Mac to boot from the CD then switch to the USB
look at
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Downloads#Apple_Mac_OS_X
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_on_a_Stick/Mac
(The USB contains both a boot and an EFI boot folders)

I am geting ready to do so.
USB of Sugar-v4 and boot helper in CD drive. : )

(Diskless hp pavillion laptop Turion 64x2 with nivida)

Is this the boot helper I posted earlier? It won't work with Sugar-v4,
just v3 Mirabelle. I can rebuild it for v4 if you're interested in
testing it.

Please do make one, if it works with Soas-v4; you will be a Hero. I will
gladly test it ( I have no Intel Mac however).

One caveat is that f15 seems destined to use systemd (
http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/systemd.html ) and upstart for
booting. : /

It was experimented in early Soas f14 builds and proved much too buggy.

NOTE: As a test. I did burn your soas-3-boot-test.iso to a CD and booted
with it in a hp Laptop.
It found and switched to my 2 GB Soas-v3-Mirabelle USB and sucessfully
started it : )

The problem, well, one of the problems I was trying to solve was
booting the USB stick in a virtual machine. This could be handy, for
example as a way for students to bring their USB sticks home and work
on them without rebooting the family computer. Is there a recommended
way to install Sugar on a Stick inside a virtual machine so it saves
its state across reboots?

In a install of f14-RC1-live to a HD with yum groupinstall sugar-desktop
done right after install. The keychain password request works correctly as
we have logged in via gdm.
A periphieral question; is there a command to call up the keychain manager
from am init 3 boot alt f5 or sugar- terminal?

No, but I think I have a fix for it. Unfortunately it didn't make the
Gold release of v4 which will be out on Tuesday. It will be added as
an update though.

I was hoping to do a remix where the keychain-manager comes up prior to
starting sugar. Is this possible? Do we need to put first-boot back in
our builds?

I don't think so, either way that decision is now one for v5 now.

When will your fixes get to rawhide. (I a can do a remix with the
mini.ks pointed to it)

How soon till the nightly-composes resume? I am ready to test: )
