Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. e-Xstream's software already works with a range of MSC's software tools. That software is used for failure prediction of parts in a structural system, and reduces the costs of physical testing needed to validate those systems. Local Corporation Launches Mobile Apps ---- Irvine-based Local Corporation, the online local search and marketing firm, said today that it has launched a new set of mobile apps. The firm said its new iOS and Android apps lets users search for information on local businesses. Both apps are free. Local said the new apps are an expansion by the company into the U.S. mobile advertising market. THe new apps focus on finding local businesses, and include maps of business locations and directions; user reviews; and search by keyword or voice. ViSalus, With LA Tech Founder, Drops IPO Plans ---- ViSalus, the nutritional supplements firm headed by former Los Angeles technology entrepreneur Ryan Blair, has withdrawn its IPO, according to a filing with the SEC. The firm did not say why it is withdrawing its IPO, only saying that it has decided not to proceed with the initial public offering of its securities at this time. ViSalus had filed for an IPO in August. Blair was the founder of PathConnect, SkyPipeline, and 24x7 Tech; Blair documented his path from the technology world to health supplements in his book, "Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain: How I Went from Gang Member to Multimillionaire Entrepreneur" last year. HotOutlines.com Looks To Cut Class Time, Earn Students Money ---- A new, Los Angeles startup, HotOutlines.com has debuted its service, which lets students and colleges and universities upload their class notes, outlines, and study guides, and sell them for a commission. The new startup--founded by Jonathan Roven and Ricky Yu--lets students browse for their school, and then download study guides other users might have made available for their classes. The startup said it will allow students who took a course in a prior year upload an outline in exchange for another outline, plus share in any revenue from downloads of that outline or those notes. Commissions range from 20% to 50%, depending on how many outlines a student uploads; the site currently features a small number of notes from Loyola Marymount University. BUZZMEDIA Ties For Brand, Influence Research ---- Los Angeles-based content publisher BUZZMEDIA said Wednesday morning that it has tied with a research firm, to help mine its network of properties to help brands understand influencers and consumers. According to BUZZMEDIA, the partnership with Translation LLC will work on research that will explore the "interplay between influencers and consumers." The two said its joint research will measure various aspects of how consumers interact with brands, content, and influencers, and how consumers turn to information about brands. The company said it will debut the study in Q4. BUZZMEDIA operates an extensive network of music, celebrity, and other blogs and content sites. No details on the business arrangement between BUZZMEDIA and Translation LLC were announced. KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals Sets IPO Pricing Range ---- Calabasas-based KYTHERA Biopharmaceuticals, a venture-backed developer of aesthetic medicine products, has set its IPO pricing range, saying earlier this week that it is expectings its IPO price to be between $14.00 and $16.00 per share. KYTHERA is looking to list on the NASDAQ Global Market as KYTH. Kythera is venture backed by Versant Ventures, ARCH Ventures, Prospect Venture Partners, JAFCO, Fidelity, and others. KYTHERA is offering up 4M shares of its common stock in the offering. The pricing range is among one of the steps in the IPO process, and usually happens as a part of a company's IPO roadshow and efforts to set its IPO price. Kythera filed for its IPO in May. Fisker Karma Panned In Consumer Reports ---- The latest review of the Fisker Karma, the plug-in hybrid of Irvine's Fisker Automotive, is not good news for the already embattled firm. Consumer Reports said in a release that the Fisker Karma is "full of flaws", including a dash that is an "ergonomic disaster". Consumer Reports called attention to the Fisker Karma Tuesday, saying that despite a range of 38 miles on a full charge without going to the engine, and "first-class" interior materials, the Karma does not compare well with other luxury cars. Fisker has been struggling to overcome image problems as it launches it cars to market; despite endorsements from such notables as Justin Bieber and Leonardo Dicaprio, and backing of famed venture capitalist Ray Lane of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the firm has been battling issues with its batteries (due to third party supplier A123); a number of minor recalls; a highly publicized sedan fire in August in Woodside, California; and issues accessing its $529M government loan. The Consumer Reports review is unusual, in that the car is the most expensive car the organization has ever tested, at $107,850; the magazine is known more for its testing of more practical, mainstream consumer sedans and other vehicles. Movie Hackathon Combines Film, Technology, Prizes ---- In the latest "hackathon" to hit Southern California, the Film Independent Forum has just announced a new Movie Hackathon, hosted by Zach James' ZEFR, which will look to spur programmers to create new, engagement experiences and tools for filmmakers and film lovers. The group is hosting an all night hackathon starting Friday, October 19th which will put up to fifty programmers against each other to create new web, mobile, or desktop apps on the theme of film and technology. The group is offering up a $2500 first prize, $1500 second prize, and $500 third prize for entries in the hackathon. ZEFR is the online media startup which runs MovieClips.com, and recently expanded into sports and other content.
