Accelerator To Exit In 14 Months, With Eli Portnoy of ThinkNear
----
There's been a sudden surge in accelerator in Southern California,
looking to help get startups off the ground and funded. But, do they
really help? For ThinkNear, it looks like the whole process paid off
in less than two years, after the Los Angeles company went from the
TechStars accelerator just last June, to a healthy acquisition by
TeleNav earlier this month for $22.5M. To learn more about how the
company went from just an idea at an accelerator to a healthy exit, we
spoke with founder Eli Portnoy.

Congrats on the acquisition! How did the acquisition come about?

Eli Portnoy: So, we were running campaigns for a bunch of clients, and
growing our business. One of the clients (More..)

DogVacay Launches Pack Leader Program
----
DogVacay, the online peer-to-peer marketplace which lets people find
and offer up pet sitting services, is recruiting its pet sitters to
help market the service with a new program. The Los Angeles startup,
which was founded by Aaron and Karine Nissim Hirschhorn, said its new
Pack Leader program lets DogVacay hosts promote their services with
their own URL and coupon code. The company said hosts can help promote
their own home dog boarding business, offer up their own coupons, and
more, plus will also pay a bonus to those hosts when people use their
services. DogVacay is venture funded by Science Inc., Andreessen
Horowitz, First Round Capital, Quest Venture Partners, Baroda
Ventures, and a number of angels.

Greentoe Launches Ecommerce Marketplace
----
Greentoe.com, a new online e-commerce marketplace, wants to let
consumers set their own pricing for electronics products. The Los
Angeles tartup said it has launched a site which lets users set their
own price on cameras, TV, home audio equipment, and other consumer
electronics, letting them propose prices they will pay for those items
and letting retailers big on those offers. The new company is led by
Joe Marrapodi, who was most recently Vice President of Digital at LBI
Entertainment, and also served at Intermix Media, according to his
biography. The firm's co-founder is Andrew Kurland, who was previously
at Deloitte Consulting.

NantWorks' Firm Tensorcom Ships Wireless Chip
----
Tensorcom, one of the companies which is part of NantWorks, the
technology development firm owned by billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong,
said today that it has demonstrated a ultra low power, high speed
multi-gigabit wireless chip. The chip, which is aimed at mobile
devices, transmits data at 2.5 gigabits per second and only takes 100
miliwatts of power. Nantworks said the new chip is aimed at being used
in mobile phones and tablets, and meets WiGig/IEEE 802.11ad
requirements. It's unclear when NantWorks took a stake in TensorCom,
although a regulatory filing indicates that the company raised $9M in
funding from NantWorks in April of 2011.

BuQu Tech Plans Line Of Charging Accessories
----
Camarillo-based BuQu Tech, which is a subsidiary of Battery-Biz, said
today that it is planning a line of magnetic charging systems to make
it easier to charge iOS and Android smartphones. BuQu Tech said its
Magnetyze magnetic charging system will allow users to charge their
smartphones and eliminate the need for multiple cords and cradles. The
firm has rolled out a protective case for the Apple iPhone 4/4S, which
also works with a charging stand which the firm says charges that
phone using magnetic technology; the company is now planning similar
products for the Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, iPad, and various
charging stands and stations for home, in the car, and in various form
factors.

Acacia Research Names New VP
----
Newport Beach-based Acacia Research, the patent licensing firm, said
today that it has named David Witt as Vice President of Acacia
Research Group LLC. Witt joins the firm from Texas Instruments, where
the company said he was involved in architecture and development of
TI's OMAP2, OMAP3, and OMAP4 application processors. Witt has also
served at AMD, Analog Devices, VIA Technology and Motorola. Acacia
Research acquires and aggressively licenses technology patents.

Amonix Claims Solar Efficiency Record
----
Seal Beach-based concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) solar power systems
manufacturer Amonix claimed Tuesday that the firm has broken a record
in the efficiency of converting sunlight into energy. Amonix said
testing by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) found that
the firm's systems had an outdoor operating efficiency rating of
33.5%. That beats an earlier record by Amonix of 30.3 percent, the
firm said. Amonix said the testing is the highest efficiency ever
reported under real-world, operating conditions for a solar PV module.
The use of concentrating photovoltaic solar power systems improves the
efficiency of solar cells, due to more sunlight reaching those cells;
typical non-concentrating solar panels range from 18 to 24 percent,
and research (non production) cells have demonstrated much higher
efficiency.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm
----
Burbank-based The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm Ltd., the
film company owned by George Lucas, in a deal worth $4.05 billion,
Disney said Tuesday afternoon. Disney said it would pay stock and cash
for Lucasfilm, with approximately half in cash and 40M in shares.
Lucasfilm owns the rights to Star Wars. According to George Lucas, the
move came as it was time to "pass Star Wars on to a new generation of
filmmakers." Disney gains rights to the Star Wars franchise and
operating businesses, including live action film production, consumer
products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production;
Lucasfilm owns Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic,
and Skywalker Sound.

Rexter Finds Funding To Help Professionals Manage Relationships
----
A new, Altadena-based startup, Rexter, has scored some funding to help
it build its software algorithms and tools to help manage a user's
professional relationships. The company--co-founded by Andy Wilson
(Momentum Venture Partners, Yahoo) and John Slade (Yahoo)--apparently
recently raised a round which included Siemer Ventures. Other
investors in the company have not been announced. Rexter's advisors
notably include Dr. Galen Buckwalter (founder of eHarmony), Kamran
Pourzanjani (Pricegrabber), Jim Armstrong (Clearstone Ventures), Ted
Meisel (Overture/Elevation Partners), Sean Moriarty
(Mayfield/Ticketmaster), Paul Weiskopf (Adobe), Jarl Mohn (Liberty
Digital), and Todd Tappin (Gores Group). Wilson and Slade both were at
Overture, helping to build up that company before Yahoo acquired the
company; Wilson has been applying his operational experience in years
since at Momentum helping companies get funded and ramping their
business.

EverySignal Officially Launches To Filter Out Important Moments
----
Tired of missing the important moments in that firehose of social
updates from your friends? EverySignal, the latest startup out of
startup incubator/studio Science, Inc. officially launched Tuesday to
tackle that problem. EverySignal said it has created a new
service--built on machine learning algorithms and social search
software--to help filter out life's most important moments from users'
social streams. EverySignal said its service cuts through the clutter
and calls attention to "important life moments" in social streams,
such as highlighting births, engagements, promotions, a new home, and
other moments. EverySignal--which has been in soft launch since
September--delivers email notifications to let users know about the
important events in their social circle, rather than having to filter
through a deluge of social networking updates and data. The firm's CEO
and founder is Derek Merrill.

Miro Technologies Acquired By Boeing
----
San Diego-based Miro Technologies, a developer of software to manage
maintenance, supply chain, and repair for the defense and aerospace
industry, has been acquired by Boeing. Financial terms of the buy were
not disclosed. Miro becomes part of Boeing's Defense, Space & Security
arm. Miro was owned by Newport Beach private equity firm Solis Capital

BeachFront Media Adds Windows 8 Support
----
Burbank-based Beachfront Media, the firm which operates the MeFeedia
video discovery site, has upgraded its tools and platform to support
Windows 8. The firm said it now supports Windows 8 App creation,
deployment, and management via its Beachfront Builder tool. Beachfront
Builder is a tool which lets video producers, TV networks, and others
create their own custom video applications; the tool is based on
Beachfront Builder's work in creating the MeFeedia. MeFeedia renamed
itself BeachFront Media back in June, as the company shifted into
providing its video technology as a white label solution for other
video creators. BeachFront is headed by Frank Sinton.

EdgeCast Expands Internationally
----
Santa Monica-based content delivery network operator EdgeCast Networks
said Tuesday that it has expanded its global network, opening up new
point of presence (PoP) locations in Vienna, Austria, Stockholm,
Sweden, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The firm said the expansion comes to
meet "surging" customer demand for its services. The firm said its
network is now carrying 4 percent of worldwide Internet traffic.
EdgeCast provides content delivery network (CDN) services, which are
used by websites to accelerate and offload traffic from web users.

November 16, Santa Monica -- Next Generation Entrepreneurship & Global
Crowdfunding Forum. The Forum is an unprecedented and exclusive gathering
of active entrepreneurs, angel investors, VCs, accelerators, and
crowdfunding experts. This dynamic and high-powered group will discuss
current trends shaping the future of entrepreneurship, and brainstorm
around crowdfunding and the best financing solutions for innovative
startups and emerging ventures. Please note that the format of the Forum
is highly interactive, so we’ve structured the program to be fast-paced,
fat-free, and high impact, with no accommodation for long speeches and
sleep-inducing PowerPoint presentations. In fact, most of the sessions
will move quickly from brief introductions into an active and open
dialogue in Q&A format to engage all participants. In short, this should
be a lot of fun! Plus we all want to walk away with not only valuable
insights and business contacts, but also real actionable solutions that we
can use to advance new ventures immediately.. See
