How Younity Is Unifying Your Files Across Devices, with Erik Caso
----
If you're like the typical device user today, you've got a smartphone,
laptop, desktop, not to mention a dozen cloud accounts where you're
storing your documents, music, video, and other files. How do you
track where those files are? And how do you make sure you can access
those files from anywhere? How about if it didn't matter where you
stored those files, and they were available from anywhere? Entangled
Media, one of the startups out of the current class at MuckerLab, has
developed Younity (www.getyounity.com), a service which hopes to do
just that--make your files available from anywhere. We caught up with
Erik Caso, the firm's CEO, to learn what the startup is trying to do.
Describe what Younity is all about?

Erik Caso: Younity creates a personal cloud for all of your files, (More...)

Verdezyne Sells Technology To DuPont
----
Carlsbad-based Verdezyne, the developer of industrial biotechnology
and renewable chemicals, said today that it has sold its proprietary
xylose isomerase technology to DuPont Industrial Biosciences.
Verdezyne did not disclose financial details of the technology sale.
Verdezyne said DuPont has purchased rights to its patented xylose
isomerase technology, for us in the biofuels and biochemical fields.
The technology is used for converting sugar to fuels and chemicals.
Verdezyne is venture backed by BP Alternative Energy Ventures, DSM
Venturing B.V., OVP Venture Partners and Monitor Ventures.

StockTwits Integrates With HootSuite
----
San Diego-based StockTwits said today that it has launched a new, app
for HootSuite, the provider of software used for social media
management. According to StockTwits, the new app and integration makes
it easy for HootSuite users to post messages directly to
StockTwits.com. StockTwits operates a micro-messaging service--similar
to Twitter--focused on stocks and finance discussions. HootSuite
allows businesses and others to run marketing campaigns across
multiple social networks, and is commonly also used by people to time
announcements on Twitter, for example. HootSuite also connects into
social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+.
StockTwits is lead by Howard Lindzon.

Condusiv Technologies Launches New VM Software
----
Burbank-based Condusiv Technologies, the developer of utility software
which was formerly known as Diskeeper Corporation, said that it has
launched a new product aimed at accelerating access to virtual
machines. The firm said its new product, V-locity 4, is a virtual
machine accelerator aimed at VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. According
to the firm, it says its software improves performance up to 50% on
all VM platforms, according to recent benchmark testing of the
product.

Local Corporation Targets HVAC Market
----
Online local business advertising firm Local Corporation announced
this morning that it has launched a new, industry-specific website
focused on the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
market. The new site offers educational articles and other information
aboud HVAC services, and will generate leads for local businesses. The
firm said the new site is part of a series of vertical,
industry-specific sites it is launching to generate leads.

Machinima Chops 10 Percent
----
High flying, YouTube network Machinima has laid off 10 percent of its
staff, as part of a reorganization, according to reports Friday
evening. News of the layoffs first trickled out via Twitter from many
of the firm's former employees. Los Angeles-based Machinima has been
one of the most highly watched of a crop of local companies tackling
creating and distributing content on YouTube.

ThisWeekIn.com To Wind Down Video Podcasting Network
----
There's a lot of startups being built in Los Angeles around content,
and it appears the consensus is that you indeed, can create a big
business around video for the web. But, apparently, that doesn't apply
to a technology focused, online video casting network--at least, based
on the announcement Friday by Jason Calacanis that is he winding down
ThisWeekIn.com, the Los Angeles-based video podcasting firm known for
"Kevin Pollak's Chat Show", "This Week In Music", "This Week in
Venture Capital", and "This Week In Startups". Calacanis told his
mailing list that--although they were able to get the company to
break-even--they've decided that the company would not be able to
scale, so it will be winding down, and giving its remaining funds back
to its angel investors. ThisWeekIn had been particularly followed in
Los Angeles, for its This Week In Venture Capital (hosted by Mark
Suster) and This Week In Startups (hosted by Calacanis himself).
Calacanis said that it didn't make sense to invested in a business
which had "limited upside."
