Southern California Startups Raise $761.12M in Q2 2014

The latest venture capital totals from the
PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association's
MoneyTree Report was released this evening, tallying up $761.12M in
investments in Q2 of 2014 in Southern California, up from Q2 of 2013,
when $616.83M was invested in the region.. (More...)

Boingo Wireless Names Rosenzweig To Board
----
Los Angeles-based Wi-Fi and small cell provider Boingo Wireless
announced Thursday afternoon that it has added Los Angeles technology
veteran Lance Rosenzweig as a new member of the company's board of
directors. Rosenzweig is the CEO of Aegis USA, and was founder of Los
Angeles-based PeopleSupport. Rosensweig sold PeopleSupport to Aegis
back in 2008. Rosenzweig also sites on the boards of Quality Systems
Inc. and Apptera Inc. Boingo Wireless said the addition of Rosenzweig
will help the company with scaling its business.

Wallaby Launches Samsung Gear App

Pasadena-based Wallaby, the credit card optimization app developer led
by Matthew Goldman, has rolled out a new app for the wearable
market--running on the Samsung Gear 2. (More...)

Startups Selected For Siemer WaveMaker Awards

Five startups have been named winners at the Siemer Summit, the tech
confab which has been being held in Santa Monica for the past couple
of days by local investment banking company and investor Siemer
Ventures, highlighting some of the top startups in the region. The

Moviepilot Hits Hiring Accelerator As Focus Shifts To LA

Los Angeles-based Moviepilot, the online film review and publishing
site which recently sold off its German operations, has hit the hiring
accelerator here in Los Angeles as it has shifted its plans to here in
the U.S. According to Aaron Kelly, Director of Content and Community,
the company is looking for writers, video producers, social media
mavericks, marketeers and ultra passionate movie fans to help the
company grow from what is just fifteen people at the moment in LA. The
startup--which moved here back in 2012--offers up a wealth of movie
related content on its site.

SpinMedia Buys Death and Taxes
----
Los Angeles-based SpinMedia said Thursday that it has acquired Death
and Taxes, an online magazine focused on indie music news, pop
culture, politics, and entertainment. Financial terms of the
acquisition were not disclosed. SpinMedia said that Death and Taxes
sees around 1 million unique visitors a month.

Activision Sued By Former Dictator Manuel Noriega
----
Santa Monica-based videogame maker Activision has been sued by former
Panama dictator Manual Noriega, over his depection in the game "Call
of Duty: Black Ops II". Noriega is suing Activision Blizzard over what
he says is using his name and likeness without his permission. Noriega
rules Panama from 1983 until 1989, when he was unseated by the United
States in a military invasion. The lawsuit was filed in the  Los
Angeles County Superior Court.
