Few SoCal Investors In List Of VCs Using Social Media
----
Kred, a company which it tabulating social media influence, released
its list of top venture capitalists this week, with only a single
representative from Southern California: Mark Suster of GRP Ventures.
Suster was the sole Southern California venture capitalist on the list
of top 50 influencers and outreachers, taking sixth place on both
rankings. Kred creates its rankings based on how frequently a person
is retweeted, replied, mentioned and followed on Twitter. A majority
of venture capitalists in the region apparently are not socially
active on Twitter, and did not show up on the list.

Vital Therapies Raises $16M
----
San Diego-based Vital Therapies, a biotechnology firm focused on
treatments for acute liver failure, said Thursday that it has raised
$16M, part of a $76M mult-stage commitment to the firm by its
investors. The firm said the funding will go towards funding three,
phase 3 trails of the company's liver therapy, which is aimed at
treating acute liver failure. The trials are being held in the US, EU,
and Australia/New Zealand. The firm did not say which of its existing
investors are participating in the funding. The company says on its
website that it has so far raised more than $75M in funding since
inception in 2003.

Viddy: Last Day For Contest Submissions
----
Today (Friday) is the last day for contest submissions for Los
Angeles-based mobile video sharing site Viddy, the company said last
night, as part of its "Rule the Beach: Hack Your Way into Viddy"
contest. Viddy is dangling $10,000 and a trip to Los Angeles to
interview for a position at the company, which it looking to do for
mobile videos what Instagram did for photos. Viddy--which has been
running its contest for the last two months--said that submissions are
due on or before midnight.

Contour Energy Targets Use In Medical Devices
----
Azusa-based Contour Energy Systems, the venture backed developers of
advanced battery systems, said today that it is targeting the medical
device market with its products. The firm said its Li/CFx battery
cells are particularly well-suited for medical applications, due to a
flat discharge profile, low internal resistance, and light weight. The
firm said it hopes that manufacturers of drug infusion pumps,
neurostimulators, pacemakers, bone-growth stimulators, glucose
monitors, defibrillators and other devices will consider its products;
the firm did not say if it has yet sold its batteries into the market.

Delivery.com Expands Into Los Angeles
----
Delivery.com, which provides online ordering and delivery from
restaurants, grocery stores, and other local stores, said Thursday
that it has expanded into the Los Angeles area. The New York company
said it will provide its delivery services in such areas as Central
Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Delivery.com's service lets
users search for nearby restaurants, and browse prices and menus of
items for delivery. The service also lists minimum order prices and
adds a delivery charge for the service.

Cytori Gets $106M Contract Award
----
San Diego-based Cytori Therapeutics, a developer of  cell therapy
products aimed at treating cardiovascular disease and repairing soft
tissue, said today that it has been awarded a contact worth up to
$106M. The contract came from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Service's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority
(BARDA). Cytori said the contract covers preclinical and clinical
development of treatments for thermal burns combined with radiation
injury--a new use of its technology--particularly following a
mass-casualty event.

Mogreet Targets Developers, Debuts Mobile API
----
Los Angeles-based mobile messaging firm Mogreet is expanding into the
telephony API market, telling its users that it has just opened up a
new suite of APIs which allow users to send SMS and MMS messages, look
up user information, and trancode media. Mogreet said in an email to
users that its new service is aimed at quickly and easily add
messaging and rich media to mobile applications. The new API is the
first move by Mogreet into making the technology it developed to help
enterprises and small businesses send SMS and MMS messages, and making
that available to third party developers. The company told its users
that SMS and MMS messages can be sent for 1 cent permessage, and that
it will be extending $25 in free credit to developers to try out the
new service.

WSJ Top Startups List: SoCal Matches Silicon Valley On IPOs
----
One of the most interesting things about the Wall Street Journal's
list of top startups in the U.S.? The number of IPOs of companies on
the Journal's list from 2011 from Southern California matched the
number of IPOs of Silicon Valley companies. Of the list of 50
startups, both San Diego's ServiceNow and fellow San Diego firm Active
Network has IPOs last year, out of only a total of six IPO exits from
the WSJ's list. ServiceNow was ranked last year at 49; Acitve Network
was ranked at 16. Of the other four IPOs, two were from Silicon Valley
firms (Imperva, Jive Software); and one from Utah (Fusion-io), and the
other from Indiana (ExactTarget).

StockTwits Racks Up Investors Relations Customers
----
San Diego-based StockTwits said today that its service is gaining
traction with corporate customers, with over 200 investor relations
departments now using its service. StockTwits said that Dell, Verizon,
FedEx, and many others are using its service to distribute financial
information--in a compliant way--to social media users. StockTwits
began offering its investor relation product in June of last year,
looking to help companies address social media users and investors
without upsetting regulators. The firm's service is a micro-messaging
service similar to Twitter, with a focus and extra features around
discussing publicly traded stocks.

Fisker Automotive Raises $103M More
----
Irvine-based electric car maker Fisker Automotive has just raised
$103.7M as part of an ongoing, $150M funding round, according to a
regulatory filing by the firm Wednesday. Details on the funding have
yet to be announced by the company. The funding brings Fisker's total
raised to well north of $1.2 billion. Fisker is venture backed by such
companies as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, New Enterprise
Associates, and others.

Freedom Meditech Gets $2M In Credit Line
----
San Diego-based Freedom Meditech, a developer of opthalmic medical
devices being used to detect disease and measure patient health, said
Thursday that it has secured a $2M line of credit. The credit line
came from Silicon Valley Bank. Terms of the credit line were not
announced. Freedom Meditech said it would use the funding to ramp
manufacturing and distribution of its products. According to the
company, the line comes in anticipation of a Series B financing close
by the company; details of that funding have yet to be announced.
Freedom Meditech's medical devices measure the crystalline lens of the
human eye, as a way to detect chronic diabetes. The device uses blue
light to evaluate a patient's health in a non-invasive way.

Oversee.net Ramps Mobile Efforts, Names Mobile GM
----
Los Angeles-based Oversee.net, the online marketing and domain
monetization company, is bolstering its focus on mobile apps, saying
that it has hired a new General Manager of Mobile Solutions. The
company said it hired Min L. Chan in the new position, to head up
development of mobile apps for Oversee's consumer-oriented websites in
the travel, retail and consumer finance verticals. Chan was previously
Executive Director of Mobile Consumer Products for YP Holdings, and he
has also served at Helio, Disney mobile, Mtogo, and Schlumberger. Chan
reports to CEO Debra Domeyer. Oversee.net operates a network of lead
generation websites focused on travel, retail, consumer finance, in
addition to its domain monetization businesses.

Novatel Powers AT&T's New MiFi Liberate
----
Wireless carrier AT&T announced Thursday that it is shipping a brand
new, mobile hotspot product called the MiFi Liberate, which features a
2.8 inch touchscreen display and support for up to 10 Wi-Fi devices.
The new device comes thanks to San Diego's Novatel Wireless--the maker
of AT&T's current MiFi mobile hotspots--which will be offering the new
device exclusively to At&T. AT&T said the new device will allow users
to see data usage, manage connected devices, and change settings all
from the new touchscreen; the new device also includes support for
sharing files and photos from microSD cards inserted into the new
device. Pricing on the new device was not announced.

AutoGenomics Files For IPO
----
Vista-based AutoGenomics has filed for an IPO, saying that it is
looking to raise up to $65M in a public offering on the NASDAQ Global
Market. The maker of molecular diagnostics systems--used by reference
laboratories, hospitals and specialty clinics--said it is looking to
list as AGMX. The firm's IPO is being underwritten by Leerink Swann,
Stephens Inc., Mizuho Securities, and Cantor Fitzgerald & Co.
AutoGenomics said it had  net income of $459,000 on net revenues of
$8.69M for the first six months of 2012.

Xirrus Ranks Two In WSJ Top Startups List
----
In a proof that it's not all social media and e-commerce here in
Southern California, number two ranking startup in The Wall Street
Journal's ranking of the "Top 50 Startups" is none other than wireless
hardware provider Xirrus, based in Thousand Oaks. The Wall Street
Journal's list of top startups, which was published Thursday morning,
also listed seven other Southern California-linked companies. That
list included Laguna Hills-based Glaukos at number 7; Donuts Inc., the
domain name startup with links to Demand Media at number 14; Idealab's
Ubermedia at number 16; Machinima in West Hollywood at number 21; San
Diego's PatientSafe Solutions at 24; SmartDrive Systems at 25; and
SocialVibe at number 23.
