Tongal Raises $15M For Crowdsourced Video
----
Los Angeles-based Tongal, an online platform which helps brands
crowdsource video for their advertising, said this morning that it has
raised $15M in a Series B funding. The funding came from Insight
Venture Partners. Tongal, which was founded by Rob Salvatore, James
DeJulio and Mark Burrell, allows creative types--directors, actors,
animators, writers, and others--submit their ideas, videos, and more
for specific projects solicited by brands. The firm says it has worked
with such brands as LEGO, Pringles, McDonalds, Crest, Ace Hardware,
Scope, and others. The firm said the funding will go towards build out
of its community and expansion of its community.

Ixia Bumps Estimates As Acquisitions Grow
----
Ixia, the developer of network testing hardware and software, said
this morning that it has bumped its revenue guidance for the fourth
quarter of 2012, and now expects its revenues to be between $123.5M
and $124.5M. The publicly held company said that the fourth quarter
combined revenues for its two recent acquisitions, Anue Systems and
BreakingPoint Systems, will be in the range of $30 to $31M, versus an
earlier guidance of $26 to $28M for those two businesses. Ixia has
been in a very acquisitive mode in the last year, as it picked up both
Anue Systems and BreakingPoint Systems as it looks to grow the
company. Ixia is headed by Vic Alston.

Esri Wins Arizona Firm
----
Redlands-based geographical information systems software developer
Esri has signed on Phoenix, Arizona-based Intellimed International as
a customer, the firm said Friday. Esri said that Intellimed, which is
a major health care data and analytics company, will use Esri's
demographics data for its future health care forecasting and planning
projects with hospitals. Size of the deal was not announced. Esri is a
major provide of geographic information system (GIS) technology, with
its ArcGIS software being widely used across industries for overlaying
data onto maps for better understanding and visualization of that
data.

StartEngine Opening Up New Downtown Location
----
StartEngine, the startup accelerator founded by Howard Marks, the
co-founder of Activision, is expanding, saying thta it is opening up a
new location in downtown Los Angeles. The accelerator--which has its
first space in Westwood--said it is opening up a new office at 1010
Wilshire Blvd with TENTEN Wilshire, to provide startups with space and
opportunities for growth across Los Angeles. The accelerator is the
first one to target the downtown area with an office location.
StartEngine said the new office is a split-level loft, with access to
such locations as the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and a few
metro stops from Pasadena. StartEngine announced the new location in
an invitation to an opening event January 15th for its mentors and
companies. StartEngine offers up mentoring, funding, and a program to
help early stage startups get to the next level, and is one of a
number of accelerator programs which have been active in the Los
Angeles area over the last year or so.

GameFly Wins Ruling Against Postal Service
----
Los Angeles-based games-by-mail service Gamefly scored a victory
Friday in a dispute with the U.S. Postal Service, after a U.S. appeals
court ruled that the the Post Office unfairly gave Netflix and
Blockbuster special services in sorting DVDs. GameFly had filed suit
in 2009 saying that the preferential treatment by the USPS to Netflix
and Blockbuster was unfair to the company, resulting in high breakage
rates and other issues. That meant that GameFly was forced to use more
expensive, flat cardboard packaging to send its rental games to
customers, instead of the cheaper First Class rate that both Netflix
and Blockbuster were able to use. The Post Office apparently was
providing hand-sorting of DVDs for Netflix.

January 30, Santa Monica -- "A Night of Innovators" Hosted by CSQ,
StartEngine, and Sky Dayton, founder of EarthLink and Boingo. The winter
edition of C-Suite Quarterly profiles and interviews dozens of Los
Angeles' most prominent innovators and revolutionary entrepreneurs. Our
cover feature Sky Dayton, creator of both EarthLink and Boingo, follows a
precedent for the caliber of leaders we engage to share their insight and
stories of success with our audience. Along with the tenured LA innovators
that made our top 10, we also highlight our NextGen10: These
"techno-preneurs" already have achieved some measure of success, and their
continued upward trajectory is worth noting. All of those profiled and
interviewed in the issue have been invited, and many have already
committed to attend. Howard Marks, co-founder of Activision and co-chair
of StartEngine (LA's largest incubator), served as guest editor for the
2012-2013 edition of our annual Innovation issue, and he subsequently
embraced our event by offering to serve as co-host. He has invited his
network of venture capitalists, successful entrepreneurs, and C-level
executives from the region's most significant tech-based organizations.
