Factual Adds Nutrition Information
----
Los Angeles data startup Factual has expanded its big database in the
sky to include nutrition information, including ingredient lists and
nutrition attributes for consumer packaged goods. Factual said late
Wednesday that its service now includes ingredient lists for over
350,000 of the most popular consumer packaged goods, and nutrition
facts for over 150,000 packaged foods. Factual's APIs and data is used
by software developers to easily access and update a wide range of
data, including location information and other data sets; the
expansion into nutrition allows mobile, web, and other developers to
call up things like number of calories for a snack, to find foods
which do or do not include certain ingredients, and much more. The
nutrition information is part of its Global Products dataset, which
also is tied into UPC codes.

InTouch Health Names New Board Member
----
Santa Barbara-based telemedicine equipment developer InTouch Health
announced this morning that it has named John Glaser, Ph.D., to its
board of directors. Glaser is CEO of the Health Services Business Unit
of Siemens Healthcare, and also has served at Partners HealthCare and
at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Semtech Launches New Line of ICs
----
Camarillo-based Semtech, which develops analog and mixed signal
semiconductors, said today that it has launched a new set of
integrated circuits aimed at providing capacitive touch sensing for
home appliances and consumer electronics. The company said its new
SX95xx platform is aimed at "green" home appliances, such as LCD TVs
and monitors, automotive, consumer products, and more.

Appetize Lets You Order Food At Sports, Other Events
----
A new, Los Angeles startup, Appetize, is looking to make it easier for
sports and other event fans. Appetize said Wednesday that it has
released a new version of its app, which lets fans at venues order
from a menu and have food delivered right to their seat. The
app--which runs on both iPhone and Android--is currently live at a
number of concert and sporting venues in California, according to the
company, including at the Valley View Casino Center, which is hosting
Thursday's Laker's pre-season game. Appetize said that so far, its app
has been live at events in San Diego, including at The Black Keys,
Kelly Clarkson, WWE, LMFAO, American Idol Live and Red Hot Chili
Peppers.

Health Essentials Gets Backing From Bessemer, SV Life Sciences
----
Santa Ana-based Health Essentials, a provider of post-acute care for
the frail and elderly, has scored a round of growth capital from two
Silicon Valley venture investors. Health Essentials said it raised a
round of funding from SV Life Sciences and Bessemer Venture Partners,
which will be used for expansion of services and geographies. Size of
the funding round was not disclosed. Health Essentials is headed by
Kim Phan, and offers up clinical services to skilled nursing
facilities, hospices, pharmacies, and more. The company's affiliates
include GeriNet Medical Associates, Gerinet Healthcare, Hospice Touch
Inc., Comfort Rx and Health Essentials DME, and the firm currently
provides services in California, Nevada, and Arizona.

NantHealth Gets Funding From Verizon
----
Los Angeles-based NanHealth, the subsidiary of NantWorks, the
incubator of LA billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, has scored an
investment from Verizon Investments, the investment arm of Verizon
Communications. Size of the funding was not disclosed. NanHealth said
it will use the funding to "accelerate innovation" at the company.
NantHealth is looking to provide advanced, next-generation healthcare
services by using fiber networks, cloud computing, and wireless
technology. The firm was founded by Soon-Shiong, and is just one of a
large number of companies Soon-Shiong has wrapped into NantWork in the
last couple of years. NantHealth says it is aiming to acceleate
innovation to enable better patient care and reduce healthcare costs.

OpenGate Capital Buys Unit From Thermo Fisher Scientific

Los Angeles based private investment firm OpenGate Capital said
Wednesday morning that it has acquired the Laboratory Workstations
business of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Financial details of the buy
were not disclosed. The Thermo Fisher Scientific unit is a designer,
manufacturer and installer of laboratory furniture, fume hoods and
epoxy resin tops. The business has approximately 1800 employees, and
generated $175M in annual reveues.

Laffster Lands $750K
----
Venice, California-based comedy startup Laffster said Wednesday
morning that it has raised $750,000 in a funding round, which came
from Greylock Partners, Howard Lindzon, Adam Nash (LinkedIn), Chris
Williams (Maker Studios), Samer Hamadeh (Vault.com), Christopher Grey
(CapLinked), Sonny Singh (Jumio), and The Paradigm Agency, along with
others. The company--one of the startups out of Santa Monica's
MuckerLab--helps users find funny videos, articles, and more. In
addition to the funding, the firm said it has launched a new iPhone
app called "Mock the Vote", which delivers humorous, up-to-the-minute
political news. Laffster is headed by Dan Altmann, who previously was
involved with IAC and its CollegeHumor site.
