Lynda.com said today that it has raised a big growth round from Accel Partners and Spectrum Equity, and also reported that the firm exceeded $100M in topline revenues last year. According to Eric Robison, the firm's CEO, the funding round will go towards increasing the firm's global reach and expanding content. Lynda.com offers up online education courses on things like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, and much more. Meritech Capital also participated in the funding. (More...) http://bit.ly/XcRcCq ChowNow Raises $3M For Mobile Food Orders ---- ChowNow, a startup which provides social, mobile, and web-based online ordering for restaurants, said this morning that it has raised $3M in a Series A funding. The funding was led by GRP Partners, and also included Double M Capitol, Daher Capitol, Karlin Ventures, and Velos Partners. The firm, which was founded by Christopher Webb and Eric Jaffe, develops software which lets restaurants take food orders from Facebook, mobile phones, and the web to receive and process orders. The startup said that it will use the funding to launch new products and expand national operations. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=45579 Local Corporation Launches In UK ---- Irvine-based local search site operator Local Corporation said this morning that it has launched a new, local search site in the U.K., the first U.K. version of its flagship local search site. As part of the launch, Local.com said it has inked an expanded search advertising agreement with Yahoo Inc., to cover both its efforts in the U.S. and the U.K. The firm said that Yahoo's search results will appear across the new U.K. site as part of the deal. Local.com's websites allow consumers to find local businesses by category. XCOR Books Flights For AXE ---- Mojave-based commercial spaceflight firm XCOR Aerospace has booked a new customer for its yet-to-be-launched suborbital spacecraft, after Unilever Group and Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) said that Unilever is purchasing 22 flights on XCOR's aircraft as part of an advertising campaign for AXE. The firms said that the flights are part of a new ad campaign called AXEApollo for the AXE brand men's cologne, body spray, and other personal care product line. Unilever said it will award its first winner of a flight on XCOR's spacecraft just after the Super Bowl, with the 21 other winners being awarded during an international, 60-country promotional campaign over the next year. Financial impact of the win was not announced. Nationbuilder Expands Beyond Politics ---- Los Angeles-based Nationbuilder, the startup developing online tools which helps organizations create web sites, organize volunteers, outreach to supporters, and more, is expanding its efforts beyond politics, the company said Tuesday. The startup said it launched a new site and suite of products aimed not just at politicians or office holders, but which also will serve nonprofits, businesses, or those in government. The startup said its tools are tailored to the needs of different types of leaders in each of those categories, in addition to politics, adding offering up such tools as website management, communications, donor management, and more. The broadening of the startup's offerings seems like a logical move, given the reduced focused on political campaigns after last fall's national elections and the sharp dropoff in elections-related spending seen after election season. Accelerator Demo Day Season Kicks Off Today ---- It's a new year, and another batch of accelerator startups, as Demo Day season in Los Angeles kicks off this week. The firm released a video of its new GoBank service Tuesday as part of its launch of the new mobile banking service. http://bit.ly/X36zwz Green Dot Takes On Mobile Banking With GoBank ---- Monrovia, California-based Green Dot, the prepaid payment card provider, has launched itself into the mobile banking market today, unveiling its new GoBank bank account. The firm said it designed the new, mobile banking account "from scratch", specifically aimed at the new mobile generation. Green Dot said the new accounts would not have any minimum balance requirements, would not include overdraft or penalty fees, no required monthly fees, and will allow users to depot their checks into an FDIC insured bank account. Other features include a network of over 40,000 fee-free ATMs, budgeting tools, savings goals, and more. Green Dot is headed by Steve Streit, and helped to create the entire category of prepaid credit cards, cards which look and act like a typical Visa or Mastercard, but are refilled by consumers on demand. Green Dot's Streit said in a statement that banking is one of the few industries in the world that hasn't yet been reinvented by Silicon Valley--and that the firm is hoping to make mobile banking as "intimate and addictive as checking Facebook or texting friends." Ross Levinsohn Named Head of The Hollywood Reporter ---- Ross Levinsohn, the former head of Yahoo and Fox Interactive Media, has just been appointed CEO of Guggenheim Digital Media, the parent firm of The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, Adweek, and other entertainment focused properties. The winter edition of C-Suite Quarterly profiles and interviews dozens of Los Angeles' most prominent innovators and revolutionary entrepreneurs. Our cover feature Sky Dayton, creator of both EarthLink and Boingo, follows a precedent for the caliber of leaders we engage to share their insight and stories of success with our audience. Along with the tenured LA innovators that made our top 10, we also highlight our NextGen10: These "techno-preneurs" already have achieved some measure of success, and their continued upward trajectory is worth noting. All of those profiled and interviewed in the issue have been invited, and many have already committed to attend. Howard Marks, co-founder of Activision and co-chair of StartEngine (LA's largest incubator), served as guest editor for the 2012-2013 edition of our annual Innovation issue, and he subsequently embraced our event by offering to serve as co-host. He has invited his network of venture capitalists, successful entrepreneurs, and C-level executives from the region's most significant tech-based organizations.
