Re: [Soekris] net6501 won't start anymore

2013-09-17 Thread Ryan McIntosh
Try a different power supply first, they generally take a beating, followed
by removing any peripherals (drives and cards) to see of you can get it to
post. If you can't get anything after that then someone here can probably
run you through further diagnostics if there's anything else that can be
done before talking to soekris about a broken board.

 I purchased a net 6501-30 autumn 2011 from Soekris Europe. It's been
working nicely for me after bios with usb boot code was in place.
I'm running ComBIOS 1.41c and boot OpenBSD from a low profile USB stick.

However this is not a boot problem, it's a board start problem.
Some time ago, after power recycling, which always went well before, the
box didn't boot up and only the green power led and the red error led
was lit. I then tried to press the reset button and the box continued to
boot as normally. Because of occasional need for power cycling this
happened a couple more times, then the other day after power cycling it
wouldn't start anymore at all. And now pressing the reset button does
nothing, except the four interface leds flash a fragment of a moment,
and then back to only green power led and red error led lit.

It stops before ComBIOS, there are no output to the serial console
whatsoever (and I have had no problems getting the serial console to
work before, so that's not it). So no disk problem or such, the box
 don't even get to POST.

Where do I proceed from here? Any thoughts? Grateful for any ideas...

Re: [Soekris] temperature (was : DSL modem recommendations?)

2010-03-12 Thread Ryan McIntosh
I've had quite a few heating issues with my 4801 ever since my original PSU
had died on me (I'm really not sure of the correlation there however). Just
running the 4801 barebones with a CF, the temp will easily climb from 40C -
60C+ in the matter of minutes with the casing closed, which it ran for a
year+ without this issue with a PATA hd enclosed in it... (maybe the chip
overheated? most likely). I suppose I'm lucky it still works though with a
heatsink and fan now keeping it sub 30's. I could imagine any amount of
issues occurring with any expansion cards enclosed in the case as it only
has lower vents by design (or maybe lack thereof?). Just my 2cents.

FWIW, I have a Viking in my net4801, and I find that it runs too hot.

I have one in my net5501. It works fine. It'd be nice to have the
source for the BIOS.

Though I agree it runs too hot. It runs hot enough that I tracked the
temperature for a month and a half.

From that data, the internal thermometer ran at an average of 78 C.
That includes periods with the cover and without. With the cover it
starts in the high 50's and climbs a degree every two or three minutes
to about 80.

With 37161 samples the mean temperature was 79 C and the median
temperature 80C. The lowest was 55 C and the highest 94 C. The
temperature of the room was around 20 C, give or take a little.

For the same data set, the 5501 attached to it had an average
temperature of 56, a median temperature of 57, a low of 33 and a high of
63.
