Re: ICE strand orientation trouble - again :/ now with images

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/763668/ICE/Strands_InstanceGeo_Rotation_ICE_Tree_01.jpg

I just need to randomize of the geometrys y-rotation, and according to the
docs and pointers given here earlier this should do the trick, but no go.
Is there a magic step I might have missed to get it working?

I have a nice setup which creates lovely grass deforming geometry instances
on strands so I can have turbulent wind moving the strands around. I am
using Emit Strands for this, but I seem to be unable to randomize the
instance y-orientation using a Randomize Rotation by Cone - they are
unaffected by this. If I create a different setup using Emit from Geometry
and Create Strands on that, I can control the y-rotation, but then the
instances are upside down, and my non simulated turbulence does not work.

How can I get to control instance y-rotation when using Emit Strands?

Hmm, I think the Realflow plugin supports exporting meshes with dynamic

Alembic would be good for this, if Max supported it out of the box.

OK have put a zip file - here -

It is the compounds we use here, and a sphere with a fur setup to show how it

create the curves off the softimage fur.

Another way would be to be able to feed a factory CreateStrandsFromCurves

Melena - multiple grooms?

2012-05-15 Thread Alan Fregtman
Hey guys,

Anyone done multiple StrandGrooms with Melena?

If I have 2 hairstyles based on Classic Hair with equal details, just
different grooming, I'd like to blend my strands grooming between the two.
Anybody know the correct way to approach this? It's been a while since I
played with Melena.

I can set my strandgroom, duplicate and freeze the cloud and use it
remotely but surely there is more elegant way to do it?

Any help appreciated.

A colleague was in today with his machine and copy of 3DS Max. It was able
to read the files and output polygons with correct normals. Curiously, the

I´d like to suggest you take the time to clean up the object in Maya.

The advantage is that your Normalpass will output useful information,
all shaders computing refraction or transparency, subsurface scattering
and last but not least reflection will give reliable output...

I know, it´s a pita but shadinglightingcomp will be far less error prone.

Personally, I´d look into converting to polygons and merging to useful
 shells.

Rhino, MOI, Maya´s convert to polygons.

The reason why I suggest to do the clean up/conversion in Maya is that it
gives you more options to edit Normals. Just make sure that User Normals
and Geometry Normals point into the same direction...

Once the geometry is in XSI, nuke the user normals and live with the
 30-35° smoothing...
