A senior policy analyst says President Salva Kiir’s move to
restructure the army is a positive step to transform SPLA.

Abraham Awolich told Radio Bakhita in a phone interview that the
president might be implementing a call by the SPLA Command Council to
make reforms in the army.

He says the changes might help promote professionalism in the army.

The changes may also allow the army to execute their mandate
effectively, Awolich adds.

Early this week, President Kiir restructured the army, dividing it
into three: Ground Force, Air Force and Navy Units.

The changes came shortly after the appointment of the army chief James
Ajongo replacing General Paul Malong Awan.
