A team of commissioners from the UN Commission of Human Rights has raised
fresh concern about violations of human rights in some parts of the country.

After a visit to the UN camps in Juba, Bentiu, and Malakal, the team says
there is an escalation of sexual violence against women and girls by armed
men in uniform.

The team says women in the UN camps have spoken to them about what the
abuses and violations they face in the hands of men in uniform.

“Women, both young and old, gave accounts of being gang-raped by armed men
in uniform,” Yasmin Sooka, the team’s chairperson, told the media on
Thursday.

Ms Sooka also spoke of an urgent need to establish the hybrid court to try
those who have committed crimes and human rights.

“In our discussion with the government they have indicated that they stand
ready to take on the task of concluding an agreement with African Union
which will give effect to ensuring that the hybrid court is able to secure
the cooperation of the government,” she added.

Ms Sooka also said the violations and impunity would continue if there is
no lasting peace and accountability.

The commission will summit its report to the UN Human Rights Council in
March next year.
