A WORLD'S FAIR | Saturday 4 August Antwort an: i...@ravenrow.org SATURDAY 4 AUGUST, 5pm JOHN ZERZAN THE MURDEROUS IDOLATRY OF THE FUTURE: ANARCHO-PRIMITIVISM AND THE END OF TECHNOLOGY John Zerzan was active in the sixties in San Francisco and Berkeley. A leading pa rticipant in the contemporary anarchist resurgence, Zerzan's political project calls for the destruction of technology. He draws the distinction between tools that stay under the control of the user, and technological systems that draw the user into their control. His critical ideas have challenged symbolic thought, mathematics, art and the concept of time. Zerzan has published in the Detroit magazine Fifth Estate and his books include Elements of Refusal (1988, 1999), Against Civilization (1999) and Future Primitive Revisited (2012). This event is free. No booking required. Expanded seating area THE REAL TRUTH A WORLD’S FAIR A project by Suzanne Treister at Raven Row over four weekends featuring four keynote speeches within a specially designed theatre: A global futurist, a U.S. Security Agency insider, an anarcho-primitivist and the international expert on world's fairs... Alongside an exhibition including three unique libraries, two video lounges and designs for a virtual world's fair. FORTHCOMING WEEKENDS: 4/5, 11/12, 18/19 AUGUST 2012 Saturdays: 3pm: Exhibition open 5–7pm: Lecture/Performance 7–9pm: Exhibition open Sundays: 11–6pm: Exhibition open, with screenings of previous lecture/performances Since London’s Great Exhibition of 1851 world’s fairs have provided a space for nations to represent themselves. They are potent signs of the fantasies, politics and technologies of their times and aspirations for the future. THE REAL TRUTH A WORLD’S FAIR exposes aspects of the present and proposes ways into the future. At the centre of the project are four lecture/performances that take place on consecutive Saturdays in a specially designed theatre. These commenced with a contextual introduction provided by Robert W. Rydell’s in-depth analysis of the politics and histories of world’s fairs, and is followed by three visionary speakers: John Zerzan, Jim Channon and Richard Thieme, who actively devote their lives to ideas, visions and projects for the future of the planet. Each lecture/performance is screened in the theatre the following day and a changing selection of memorabilia, contributed by each speaker is on display. Raven Row’s exhibition spaces provide historical background material alongside displays, artworks and libraries that present ideas for a hypothetical world’s fair. A large wall drawing made by Suzanne Treister delineates various proposals for theoretical pavilions, some of which are manifested in the galleries. The entrance gallery houses Treister’s historical display and collection of artefacts from world’s fairs. On the first floor, screenings of Strange Culture(2007) by Lynn Hershman Leeson and Das Netz (The Net) (2003) by Lutz Dammbeck are shown. Strange Culture explores the Steve Kurtz Case and is a statement on artistic freedom. In 2004, on the morning of his wife’s death, the FBI charged Kurtz with bioterrorism. Kurtz is a founder member of Critical Art Ensemble, a performance and installation art collective exploring the intersections of art, technology, radical politics and critical theory. Das Netz(The Net) is a documentary that looks at the complex story of Ted Kaczynski (the ‘Unabomber’) within a late 20th century web of technology – a system that he grew to oppose. On the second floor, the BBC television thriller series The Last Enemy (2008) shows the Pentagon’s mass-surveillance experiment, the Total Information Awareness (TIA) Program in operation in London in 2011. There are also three libraries: A Military/Intelligence Recruitment Library, Fifth EstateAnarchist Magazine 1965–2012 Library and a ‘Conspiracy Theory’ Library with books collected by Jon Bewley, founder member of the Basement Group (1979–83), Projects UK (1982–92) and Locus+ (1993–). THE REAL TRUTH A WORLD’S FAIR is a project by Suzanne Treister.
