Although the user-mode drivers use kernel features such as pppd and usb
they in themsleves shouldn't panic the kernel (thats half the point of them
being user-mode).
A kernel-panic is definatly a kernel problem (even if it is triggered by
the user-mode code).

compile a working kernel for my old pentium 133. maybe i'll try switching back
to 2.4.17
i have noticed some short interrupts generated on the usb. could this be a
dodgy usb card? could it be the modem?

Is there a good system for tracing where connection problems lie?
I've had 2 occasions in the last week where it was impossible to connect.
Yesterday's was particularly annoying. I could not connect for 6 hours.
though ie6/ms also had problems and BT my ISP claims there was a
transient
