[speedtouch] FC2 silver modem

2004-06-02 Thread Maurizio Rosetti
Hi everybody,

I'm a newcomer to this list and to both Linux and usb modems, although
I have been an unix user since many years on an intranet network.
I'd like to get my silver speedtouch 330 modem work on Fedora Core 2.
In the mailing list archive I see two solutions, one by Frederic
Ruaudel and the other by Aad Rijnberg. My inexperience doesn't allow
me
to tell the difference. Moreover, as my subscription is very recent,
I can't have access to the Duncan's patches indicated by Aad
Rijnberg;
in the archive they result protected.
My ISP uses PPPoA and PPPoverATM.
I'd appreciate your advice about how to proceed.

Thanks,

Maurizio Rosetti

Fred,

I have installed your files. Yet check_adsl.sh gives the message :

Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
PPPoATM plugin_init
PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options
PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:8.35
connect(8.35): Resource temporarily unavailable

8.35 is the right vpi.vci here, in speedtch I have simply added my ADSL
username.
I have noticed that the eth0 device, which I found already configured after
the FC2 installation,
can't be activated; I wonder whether this is a part of the same problem.

Regards,

Maurizio Rosetti

The easiest is my solution because it only consist of doing rpm -[iU]vh
blabla and set your account information. And it should work without
problem.

But if you want to understand all the process or if my solution doesn't
work, you can do it manually as Aad explained, but it's a long and time
consuming task ;o)

I remember the address of my RPMS :

http://grumz.dyndns.org/ADSL_FC2/

be carefully to not upgrade the kernel. For all package you can install
them with rpm -Uvh, but for the kernel use rpm -ivh to avoid removing
the old working one in case mine will not work.

If you want the patches, I remember their url to you :

I tried to substitute (rather blindly) firmware.bin with ZZZLP2.eni
(Rev.4) and with KQD6P2.eni (Rev. 0 and 2) but the connection still
doesn't work and check_adsl.sh writes the same message.

2004-06-06 Thread Maurizio Rosetti
I recall the message that I get using the Frederic Ruaudel files:

Plugin pppoatm.so loaded.
PPPoATM plugin_init
PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options
PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:8.35
connect(8.35): Resource temporarily unavailable

I'd like to know whether what suggested by Duncan Sands in his e-mail
of 21 May Re:redhat9 and silver speedtouch300 could work in my case
as well (I have a silver modem, differently from Frederic) and how to
get the CVS version of the user space driver, as I don't have the cvs
password.
I would also be grateful for some instructions about how to insert
this driver into what has been installed by the Frederic's rpm files.

Thanks,

Maurizio Rosetti

2004-06-07 Thread Maurizio Rosetti
Hi Fred,

I used service adsl start, then, as the connection wasn't working,
I did a check with check_adsl.sh.
I kept the modem plugged during the whole installation process; I
don't know whether this can matter.

Regards,

Maurizio

Do you really use check_adsl.sh again or it is a mistake in your

Hello everybody,

can anyone give me some references (web pages, books etc.) about the
technical background of the main issues treated in the speedtouch

Thanks in advance,

2004-06-17 Thread Maurizio Rosetti

Yes, I am. I've also tried to disinstall them and to install them again.
I use service adsl start ; the modem lights don't blink, the connection is
absent,
and check_adsl.sh reports that the firmware doesn't get loaded (as Duncan
Sands explained).

Hello,

I don't understand why the same solution doesn't work for me.
Hicham, have you copied (or renamed) ZZZLPboth.eni to firmware.bin ?

 yes copy ZZZLPboth.eni to firmware.bin

just make sure that /etc/ppp/peers/speedtch is modified rather than
 /etc/ppp/peers/adsl

Thanks

Hello everybody,
I went thru the mail archives and read the thread FC2 silver modem
I've tried the Frederic Ruaudel solution, installed the kernel rpm and
updated the others but used the combined firmware for silver
speedtouch ZZZLPboth.eni from

 http://www.hystedjp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/;

the firmware loaded fine , only I get disconnected when I run pppd

In the computer that I have here at work (LAN network) which is the twin of
the one
I have at home the line is missing. Maybe this is the explanation.
I'll check when I get home.

Thank you very much,

Do you have

usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0

in /etc/fstab ? modem_run can't load the firmware if the USB isn't mounted

I've added the line to /etc/fstab, rebooted, yet the firmware still doesn't
get loaded. I've also noticed that check_adsl.sh gives the same message

and after the command service adsl start :

2004-06-19 Thread Maurizio Rosetti
Hello,

at last my Silver Speedtouch 330 Rev. 4.0 works !!!
This after installing the new speedtouch rpm file of Frederic Ruaudel
and using ZZZLboth.eni as firmware.
(using ping I see that I lose some packets, perhaps it's normal)
Thanks to Frederic and the others who helped.
At this point I think that it is superflous that I post what asked by
Duncan.

[speedtouch] display from a remote computer

2004-08-13 Thread Maurizio Rosetti
Hello everibody,

I'm trying to display on my home computer some graphics from the
computer that I have at work. I execute xhost + before using ssh to
connect to the remote computer, and then there I set DISPLAY according
to the IP address that I have derived on the local machine using
ifconfig.
I take the address labelled with inet addr. Yet when I launch on the
remote computer an X application, I get the error: can't open display
...
Can anyone give me a hint to fix the problem ?

Thanks,
Maurizio
