Try cat /var/log/messages syslog.txt and send the relevant parts -
stuff related to modem_run, pppoa3, pppd at the end of the syslog.txt -
to the list.

Try using mgmt.o downloaded from the Alcatel website instead of the
windows file. This caused loads of CRC errors for me.

You EITHER do ppp over atm (PPPoA) or ppp over Ethernet (PPPoE). Yes it
does matter which you use because this is how the modem communicates
with the peer on the other side. PPPoA encapsulates the PPP frames
within ATM frames while PPPoE encapsulates the PPP frames in Ethernet
frames.
