You EITHER do ppp over atm (PPPoA) or ppp over Ethernet (PPPoE). Yes it does matter which you use because this is how the modem communicates with the peer on the other side. PPPoA encapsulates the PPP frames within ATM frames while PPPoE encapsulates the PPP frames in Ethernet frames.
